As disturbingly funny as it is audaciously empathetic, auteur of unease Todd Solondz’s portrait of damaged souls reaching out for connection reveals the existential void underneath middle-class suburban “normalcy.” An extraordinary ensemble cast—including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jane Adams, Lara Flynn Boyle, Ben Gazzara, and Dylan Baker—embodies an array of loosely connected New Jersey deviants, depressives, and misfits, among them a frustrated phone-sex pest, an all-American dad concealing his pedophilic urges, and a lonely woman with a grisly secret, all of whom want just one thing: to be loved. One of the most controversial films of the 1990s, the unflinching Happiness unnerves precisely because it dares to see the humanity in those most often denied it.DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew 4K digital restoration, supervised by director of photography Maryse Alberti, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrackOne 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special featuresNew conversation between director Todd Solondz and filmmaker Charlotte WellsNew interview with actor Dylan BakerTrailerEnglish subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearingPLUS: An essay by screenwriter and novelist Bruce Wagner Review: A great film, well mastered - This is a thrillingly transgressive film. The Criterion version is excellent! Review: Masterpiece! - Part of me still can't believe this movie got made. Even though that was 27 years ago. It's still shocking to watch and I think we'll go down a as a great study of human behaviour that will be taught in both film school and psychology classes.

Fantastic transfer of a classic film.
Happiness is a bit nuts, but it's potent and filled with great drama. One of Hoffman's early, brilliant roles, and it's superbly directed by Todd Solondz with a progressive and enlightening story. You won't forget parts of it that is for sure. I guess more shocking films have become normal these days, but Happiness still digs in and lets the world unravel. Fantastic transfer from Criterion that is faithful and detailed. The 4K is clearly a big step up from anything before. Absolutely necessary for film lovers.

Thought Provoking Movie
I recently viewed this film which I had not seen before and am showing it free for a group of film lovers. It is interesting, thought provoking, with some excellent acting all through the film. But one particular scene was very moving and gave me much to think about. One of the last scenes was between a father and his son and I am still thinking about it and was one of the best scenes I have ever seen in a film.......

A disgusting film, possibly the cringiest film I've ever witnessed, but in a good way, a Trainspotting like way. Very very mature, Todd Solandz is a weird dude man, but he makes esoteric masterpieces - Benway

This is in my tops 3 favourite comedies of all time. It so well written and goes to such strange places. Plus the ending is the best ending ever for a comedy by far
