Microsoft Expression Web 4 In Depth: Updated for Service Pack 2 - HTML 5, CSS 3, Jquery 2nd Edition

Who knew, times two?Who knew:1) That Microsoft, of all companies, would offer Expression Web 4 as freeware? I just found out - I'm probably the last person on the planet who should have known and did not until now - and this is after a long, long quest that began with the demise of FrontPage 2003, through a bunch of inferior web site designers (mostly demos, thank goodness) and ultimately ending up with SeaMonkey. I need not bore you with comparisons of EW4 and SeaMonkey.2) That a guy named Jim Cheshire would write an excellent manual for EW4 which contained the added surprise of a free PDF version download? I still prefer the paper manual (I just took a break from reading it to post thisw) but being able to quickly search the PDF file is a bonus. Good work, and thanks. Well worth the money.Jim, I hope you are raking in the dough from this book, seeing as EW4 is now freeware. I still cannot get over that one.

The book itself isn't bad. I happened to have a copy of Expression Web 4 and I wanted to gain familiarity in web programming and web page construction. For this purpose Web 4 is a decent training tool. So I bought this book rather than upgrade to Visual Studio 2013 Professional which has integrated most of the functionality of Web 4 and gone beyond in terms of programming models.The book is easy to read and use so I'm rating this end-of-life product 4 stars. However you have to think the price is rather inappropriate considering the product it describes is long dead and buried.

I had been using Front Page, but since Microsoft chose to discontinue a perfectly good program and replace it with Expression I will never understand. The book is great, explains every phase of Expression 4. The actual software program Expression 4 is junk. I have never had so much trouble with a program crashing every time I use it. I am looking for another web editor

Can't find what I need as far as samples of code. Index doesn't quite fit the categories which is required to find basic 'how to' stuff. Some things are OK. I've read and own other books by the author that were great. This one, however, is not his best quality writing.

An excellent book for the beginner. Step by step instructions for an easy build.

Just starting out creating web site I found this book a very good for reference. I'm still working on my site at this time I will add more later.

As a former user of Frontpage (various versions up to 2003), for which I had to purchase more than one book, I was prepared to have to study in order to use Expressions effectively. Boy was I disappointed, either at this book or the software, not sure which. Expressions claims to be WYSIWYG, but as an example try to find a straightforward way to do context sensitive menus. They're not in this book (you have to code them) and they may not exist in Expressions 4. If true, I wasted a lot of time because, as an experienced programmer (assembly language and on up) I have no desire to learn how to code in HTML, PHP or any other language.I have put up many websites using Frontpage and learned to work around its limitations. More recently I've used Wordpress, which has a more up-to-date look and functionality. But Expressions appears to force the web site design er back down into coding, not WYSIWYG.To be fair, the book is reasonably well written (hence two stars), although it is frustrating to read an early chapter and be referred out to Chpater 18 or some such. Without further anlysis, I'm pretty sure there's a better way to organize the material so that beginners can get a site up and running sooner and refine it later.
