Excellent introduction to microscopes
This isn't intended to be a scientist grade microscope. Rather it is either an introduction to microscopes for kids, or it's a tool to examine circuitry or other fine detail work. We ordered two, both of which worked perfectly straight out-of-the-box. Both the detachable camera/display and base units are independently rechargeable; and come with a decent amount of charge so you can switch on and verify they are working. Also included are slides which includes deceased bugs etc., for familiarization and examination. The optical sensor (camera) is not leading-edge technology. If compared to a Starvis II sensor (used in dashcams) you'll realize the contrast range and resolution are quite limited. However, you can control the brightness of the LED lighting (buttons behind the display) so in many cases you can easily overcome the limited contrast range. Color rendition is excellent, and the camera is well matched to the provided LCD display. There's clearly a trade-off between cost and sensor quality but considering the intended audience, I don't see a problem. If the kids show interest, we can always go up-market at a future date. I had no difficulty using this microscope to examine leaves, bugs, electronic components and boards, both indoors and out. The ability to detach the camera/display from the base made this a very useful field tool. I also liked the ability to change the color of the LED's in the base unit. This is a useful feature when examining slides as different colors can sometimes highlight the unique features of the sample under examination. Again, there is a compromise between cost and capability. At max intensity, the light isn't as bright as I would like, but that's a minor quibble. I couldn't verify the magnification; however I did note that optical quality degrades quickly at the higher magnifications. Again, to be expected at this price point. Even so, I was able to quickly identify a dry joint on a circuit board and observes mites crawling across a leaf, so again, fit for the purposes I previously noted. Overall impressions: solid construction and performance - I was pleasantly surprised. This is, in my opinion, a well-balanced combination of price and performance. We are targeting our 6 and 8 year old kids, so they begin to gain an appreciation for a world of tiny things. If their interest is fired, we will go up-market as (age) appropriate. If not, then I have a handy tool for my electronic and modeling workshop!

Very nice toy microscope, but take the magnification claims with a grain of salt
I purchased a pair of these as presents for my nephews. After playing around with one of them a bit, I was pleased with how I was able to get clear images at several magnification levels. The handle has a single knob for gross focus adjustment. I suspect the camera has some autofocus capability because it seems that once you get close to focusing, the camera seems to suddenly "snap" into focus. Note the focus knob basically has two optical zoom levels. Magnification will depend on distance to the sample and possibly other factors. At the closest focal length, the highest magnification I was able to achieve was approximately 130x. At this level , I was able to observe the individual color pixels in my Pixel 8 Pro phone. The smallest ones, which I estimate to be about 15 microns in size, appeared as 2mm "balls" on the 4" microscope screen and were very clear. Note that in addition to the optical zoom, the microscope has 5 levels of "digital zoom" controlled through a button on the back of the camera device. Starting from the most zoomed out level, the next level gives an additional 2x magnification. After that, you get approximately an additional 10% magnification with each button push, resulting in a 2.7-3x magnification level for the last button press. The 130x number I quoted above corresponded to both the highest optical and digital zoom settings. At the other extreme, the lowest settings gave a magnification of around 10x. Now coming to the question of resolution, as mentioned above, a 15 micron object was quite clear. I suspect you could probably make out items half that size (7 microns), but you'd struggle to see features much smaller. Red blood cells are around this size, so I suspect you could make out individual cells, but you'd be hard pressed to really tell what they looked like. The advertising suggests that magnifications as large as 1600x are possible, but I don't see how. The camera does have the capability to take pictures and project them onto a larger screen, thus if you were to display the output onto a 48" TV, that would give you an additional 12x magnification, putting you close to 1600x, but I suspect you would still hit some resolution limits and would struggle to see any details smaller than 4 or perhaps 2 microns. Nevertheless, the microscope seems to be well built, and the stand with adjustable height and LED lighting works well. The lights are bright and provide the option to change the color, which can be useful. The knob controls on the stand for lighting adjustments and distance control are large and easy to adjust. I can't say the same for the buttons on the camera itself. These are quite small and arranged somewhat haphazardly, making it difficult to control the microscope when trying to make fine adjustments. For some reason, the buttons for taking pictures or starting video are "touch" buttons and provide no feedback about whether they were actually pressed. A message does appear on the screen however, indicating a photo was taken or a recording started. The microscope does surprisingly well when off of it's stand. Getting objects into focus is straightforward, as is switching between the two optical zoom levels. Overall, I think this will be great for kids exploring the world of insects, or even for a grown up trying to do some fine electronics repairs. However, due to the resolution limitations, this really isn't suitable for in depth investigations of cells or any kind of lab work.

First DOA, second doing ok so far.
Our first wouldn't turn on, but did work for a day after reset. We packed away carefully in box but next day it didn't work, not even after charging and reset. We had to return using Amazon's generous return policy. We had seen this specific field microscope on a field trip and were excited to use at home. The base is very cool, especially if you turn off the wand light and use the base color lights to alter contrast of the different slides included. Other than our first dud, it's been a great item. I'll update the review only if our second one fails. 3 stars because of disappointed kids who were unable to use their cool new stem item.

Magnification is okay but not so great and cannot beat lab grade microscope
Easy to use, the material and build quality is there, magnification is okay but not so great and cannot beat lab grade microscope

This microscope far exceeded our expectations. The magnification and clarity of the image are really better than advertised. Our eight year old grandson is loving looking at spiders and slugs and many other things besides. Frankly it’s as good for an adult as a child! Great success.
