To understand how all the pieces interact you need a book like this as reference

The Internet of Things for Architects is a comprehensive book that does what it says. It combines theory, practice, and engineering advice to build a holistic system from sensor to cloud. The IOT world combines multiple domains of engineering and expertise. To understand how all the pieces interact you need a book like this as reference. It touches on device physics of sensors and power systems, goes into communication theory and why it’s important, and then rises that material to comprehensively talk about near range and long range communication. The book educates the reader of edge and gateway technology including fog compute, lambdas, and edge learning. You will understand networking and security as well. The book incorporates bleeding edge technologies and is comprehensive. For example, this is probably the best reference for Bluetooth 5 and Bluetooth mesh out right now. You also will learn of WAN protocols like cellular systems and 5G. Through in crypto currency and machine learning and this book nails it.No single book is as comprehensive and readable as this. If you are an expert in a domain like machine learning or a EE building sensors, this book is for you to understand how an IOT —SYSTEM— is built at enterprise scale.

It’s invaluable

IoT for Architects is great. Easy to read and consume, relevant history, lots of information and will make an excellent reference book for the various areas it covers. As an architect myself, I was surprised at just how much I learn each time I read it.

Love this book

Love this book! Just what I was looking for as a repository of IoT concepts and is a great launching pad for digging in to and awareness of other monitoring and IoT concepts. Well done.

If you're a real architect you don't need this book

As the headline says if you make a living as an IT Architect of any sort then you should already know everything in this book. It is just a compendium of general IT topics like Compute, Network, Storage, Cloud, and Big Data, and then the coverage is minimal, for example in the section on Big Data the author explains that Hadoop used mapper and reducers to distribute the data, yada yada, yada....Wow, real groundbreaking work here. The book is about 5" think, I started reading the first 20 pages until I realized I needed to start skimming. In about 20 minutes I went through all 4 humdred somewhat pages, and decided to return the book. Absolutely useless. There isn't a single page that really dives into the heart of IoT edge processing or core analytics with any real world examples.

Valuable book for architects developing IoT devices

The "Internet of Things for Architects" is well named. It provides good breadth and depth for those trying to get a handle on the world of IoT. The book starts with a peek into what IoT could/will be in the future, and then dips back into the history of how we arrived here. An overview of IoT device architecture is then followed by the details of the various technologies that are important for an architect: sensors, power systems, communications theory, protocols, routers, topologies, analytics, security, and so on. These are all excellent topics, and important for IoT, and Perry covers them well. The sections on sensors and Bluetooth are examples of the type of detailed and valuable explanation this book provides. They provide a good overview for those unfamiliar with the current state of the art, while giving significant detail for those needing more information. The section on sensors provides several different sensing technologies, their strengths and limitations, as well as examples of integrating sensors into a device - all valuable information when deciding which type of sensor to use in an IoT device. The section on Bluetooth is a great overview of Bluetooth classic, BLE, and Bluetooth Mesh, and how their respective communications work, even showing the contents of packets for BLE, and discussing beaconing. Since some of this information can be difficult to find, having it in one book can be a great help. The section on IoT security should be required reading for every architect considering implementing an IoT device. From the terminology and the discussion of various cyber attacks to understanding what should be done to design in security for devices, this section has much useful information for beginners as well as those with a good security background.Full Disclosure - I am a reviewer for this book, and did receive a free electronic copy. This review was not biased by this, however.

A real-world guide to IoT architecture and design

Internet of Things for Architects: Architecting IoT solutions by implementing sensors, communication infrastructure, edge computing, analytics, and securityThis book cuts through the marketing fluff and gets to the meat of what is needed to design and implement a real IoT solution. I have read a few other IoT books and they all glossed over many of the important details that this book covers. They seemed to lack the technical depth to give an architect the tools needed to go from concept to a working product. Although, the book is lengthy, I found the "Internet of Things for Architects" both technically authoritative and also easy to read. Having read through the book, I will still be keeping a copy nearby for future reference. All of the important IoT topics are covered. Networking, communication theory, analytics, fog computing, hardware sensors, IO protocols and security are all discussed in great detail. Some topics, such as software defined networking (SDN), may require additional resources to fully understand, but this book will give you a good understanding of IoT architecture. This is a must read for anyone designing or managing IoT projects.
