Great for easy, black and white zine printing
My first laser printer to use for self-published zines, and I'm impressed by the ease of use and quality of the print. I thought a laser printer would be prohibitively expensive but now realise that's an out of date opinion, and there are quite a few options that compete with decent inkjet printers, albeit not able to print in colour. I settled on this Brother printer although I was apprehensive considering some of the reviews expressed difficulties setting up and using the printer. In my case, I have found it easy to set up and use. The small LCD display is like a calculator screen, but I found it intuitive to operate using the up/down arrow and ok buttons. I opted to wirelessly connect the printer to my WiFi router and didn't need to download Brothers proprietary software to print from my Mac. The printable area reaches very close to the edges of an A4 sheet of paper, and produces a very intense and crisp black with good gradations of grey tones. I've set it to a toner saving option and the quality is still very good for black and white artwork and text. The print speed is still a novelty to me, but I think the estimated number of printed pages from the included cartridge is way more than I found. I have replaced it with a nonproprietary toner cartridge without issue. Overall, I am happy with the printer, the long term savings in printing costs over inkjet, and the greater autonomy I now have producing my own zines. UPDATE: I tried printing on 180gsm paper/card and it was a no-go using either paper feed tray and adjusting the settings to ‘heavy paper’. No problem with the 100gsm paper I otherwise use for double sided printing.

Great value for money
The reviews on this printer were all good. This is what swung my purchase. I have had three Epson colour printers previously with mixed results. Blocked nozzles, expensive ink cartridges, using ink at a rapid rate. I don't need to print colour anymore, so I was in the market for a laser mono printer. At £117.00 now £150.00 it is a bargain. Easy to set up and use. Phones, iPads and computer all printing over WiFi. Quality is v.good. yippee, no more cartridge blocks. This printer will be used in the home, and will lay idle for periods which won't affect performance.

Great basic printer, although poor support
This is a great printer that does one thing well: print. Free from the vapourware; constant overpriced ink subscriptions; planned obsolescence through destructive software updates; and persistent marketing: this is what got me to recycle my HP printer and buy a Brother printer instead (although it looks like they are starting to head towards that trend.) The toner cartridge looks set to last a very long time, meaning that whilst it is a bit pricey at the offset it is be worth the cost. Printing quality is good: I use it for letters, printing forms, printing inserts for my planner, and mail slips for posting. I don't print images but I don't think that's the use-case, however the diagrams and illustrations I have printed came out sharp. I typically print over Wifi from my Mac, Windows computer, and from mobile (iOS and Android), no problems there, although setup was interesting on Android and help was in short supply, but we got there. Where this printer lacks is in support (absolutely dismal), and intuitiveness when trying to do something slightly different. If you spend most of your time printing A4 or A5, and perhaps wish to print wirelessly from your computer or phone then you should be fine. Anything else might be a challenge. Then there is the support from Brother which is lacking entirely, you really must figure things out yourself or scroll through help forums like Reddit. The online help is incredibly poor, mainly outdated and also sparse. Therefore, know your needs beforehand. I have decided to dock a star (4 instead of 5) due to the poor support and customer service from Brother (which seems to be adopting a 'modern' trend to customer service.) I initially set up an Amazon return after wasting many frustrating hours trying to resolve some set-up and non-standard printing options, however I found solutions to both. If it wasn't for the exceptional build of the product I'd dock 2 stars.

So much better than an inkjet printer
Easy to install and use right from the start, unlike my previous experiences with temperamental inkjet printers over the years. Connected & printed with no problem using Mac, PC & various mobile phones. It has a decent sized enclosed paper tray, so you don't have to keep refilling it all the time. It prints well and fast & no issues at all. Purchased over 2 months ago. I got sick and tired of my old inkjet printer heads continually needing cleaning and rubbish print quality. I found that with inkjets if you don't use them frequently (almost every day), they don't work well. I wish I had bought a laser printer years ago.

Do yourself a favour if you are considering an inkjet. Don't. For under 150 bux you can have an absolute work horse that will NEVER jam like your inkjet did, allows you to use almost any sort of paper, and never spills ink anywhere unless you go mad and get super cheap toner. Oh, and you can get aftermarket toners if you like!
