Smooth black hammerite paint
I bought a small tin as its all I need for the job this way it won't go hard on the shelf as this stuff lasts ages if the surface is prepared well. Occasionally two coats but a great finish so for me a great product

Fifty year paint
Have been using Hammerite for fifty years. Covers well, durable, with minimal prep on ancient metalwork compared to many others. Excellent product. Where protection is more important than ultra-smooth finish, I use the cheapest brush I can get then bin it rather than clean it. The only downside to the 250ml tin - more than enough for the job - is that having bought it a while back I couldn't see it in the cupboard for looking ... a bit like the butter in the fridge, then.
