All 19 episodes from seasons 1-3 of the 1990s BBC comedy drama series following the trials and tribulations of Tony Carpenter (Dennis Waterman), a self-made millionaire from a working-class background who finds that money doesn't solve everything when he has to deal with a snobbish wife, a tearaway daughter, and an eccentric domestic staff. Episodes are: 'Walking Out', 'Mum', 'Mr Burton', 'Dawn', 'Maggie's Dad', 'Douglas', 'Barbados', 'After the Holiday', 'Ruth Makes an Effort', 'Maggie Gives Notice', 'Competition', 'Meeting Jane Webster', 'A Date With Jane Webster', 'The Golf Tournament', 'The Fishing Trip', 'Temporary Secretary', 'Parental Choice', 'Stephanie' and 'Divorce'. Review: Great series! - This series completely passed me by originally, so when I came across it recently on TV I was intrigued. I enjoyed a few episodes so decided to get the full boxset. Really enjoyable, warm series which could have done with a season 4. The characters are well written and likeable and I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys lighthearted, cosy comedy. Review: A slightly overlooked gem - "On the up" only ran for 3 series as was on TV for just 2 years, However it was one of those comedy shows that always stuck in my mind. Even now 18 years later its still a wonderful piece of television. Its very funny and sometimes touching at the same time. The show manages to cover the class divide, breaking up of a marriage and how that effects the child, friendship you name it. All done without getting too soppy, The comedy shines through. A strong cast bring this show to life and Joan Sims and Sam Kelly really shine here. The wonderful late great Joan Sims as the Sherry drinking Mrs Wembley is just legendary, and her saying "Just the one" no matter how many she has had, Sublime. Sam Kelly as chauffeur and friend to Tony Carpenter(Dennis Waterman) is also a real highlight and often totally steals the show. Buy it if you like British comedy, Buy it if you like Dennis Waterman, Its not rude its not crude, Its well written and well acted. Enjoy

Another gem for Americans to discover
Here's another fine series to tryout if you're an American craving new Britcoms that you haven't seen on PBS. This is a very pleasant, warm comedy with characters that (for the most part) actually like each other for a change. As others have said, the wonderful Joan Sims ("Madge" on As Time Goes By) is especially good but the whole cast is great. The plot centers on the personal and business struggles of the owner of a successful car rental agency. What's nice about it is that he's honorable and, while rich, hasn't let it go to his head. The chemistry between the actors is great. You can tell they like each other and the show. Very well-written and enjoyable. A pleasant change from "edgy" comedies both American and British. Like me, you'll wish the series was longer. A steal at this price.

Keep it "up!"
A great and funny treat, as one would expect from the pen of Bob Larbey ("As Time Goes By"; "A Fine Romance"). The only reason it doesn't earn a fifth star is the thinness of some of the acting: Dennis Waterman as Tony is a trifle over the top, while Judy Buxton as Ruth is transparently acting - but those are personal opinions with which others probably won't agree. Others in the cast leave little or nothing to be desired: The lovely, warm Jenna Russell as Maggie, the P/A and Sam Kelly as Sam the chauffeur. A separate mention is reserved for the magnificent late, great Joan Sims as the cook, Mrs Wembley. What an outstanding artiste she was and how greatly missed! This is great fun, and will appeal to anybody who enjoys a good laugh, especially as it cocks a snook at "the establishment" in portraying these so-called underdogs as top dogs. British humour to savour and savour again. Buy it!

An Absolute Favourite
We watched this series when first shown on TV and thoroughly enjoyed it then. It was wonderful to spend time with Dennis Waterman, Joan Sims and Sam Kelly all over again. The acting was absolutely superb - we frequently found ourselves sitting up quite late to watch the next and even the next instalment. We knew we would be in for a relaxing and enjoyable time caught up in the day to day lives of these three wonderful characters. I suppose Sam Kelly was our absolute favourite but all three of them were a joy to watch. One very sad moment - when we came to the last disc. We knew we would miss Tony, Mrs. Wembley and Sam and the time spent away from day to day cares. 'On The Up' will definitely not be put away and forgotten. Given time it will be brought out again and hopefully again and again. If you enjoyed it first time round, or missed it completely then we recommend without hesitation that you go ahead and buy it.

A laugh out loud comedy.
Although a bit dated, it is still much funnier than a lot of modern comedy's.

A Very Enjoyable Show
I'm watching this series right now and enjoying it tremendously. I'd never heard of the show, as it never played in the US, and bought it to see Joan Sims later in her career. Smart decision on my part. The entire cast is wonderful, and the stories are a pleasant reminder of a kinder and gentler era in television. I have one season left to watch, and am really wishing it had gone on for more than just three. No one has asked or mentioned, so I will, that the disks contain optional subtitles. I'd never expected to need them as I'm not hard of hearing, but they came in very handy when a gag was spoken quickly or as an "aside", and I wasn't able to pick up on it. Subs saved the day. To prospective American buyers who haven't seen it, this is a great series; highly recommend you pick up a region-free PAL compatible DVD player and this boxset.

British comedy at its best. A series that while it will result in laughter at the same time there is something of a bond with the three main characters. Actors who will surely be missed.
