Girl Power from the 1980s
No, it's not a five star film, but it's fun and well made and the DVD presents in widescreen format with nice vibrant colours. The picture quality is surprisingly good for a film from the mid 80s. Also, it's the Director's cut inluding scenes that weren't seen in the theatrical release. By way of extras there is a commentary track with director Jeannot Szwarc and special projects consultant Scott Michael Bosco. Sound quality is good too and subtitles are available for those who may need them. The product reviewed is a one disc version - follow verified purchase link. The story of the girl Kara from a utopian society in Argos somewhere far away in the universe, who loses their power source and goes off in a bubble seeking to restore it to her homeplace is fine, nothing terribly new or exciting. Kara is Superman's little cousin replete with all his superpowers, and once on Earth she goes to live in a girl's boarding school (very British except it's in the USA - which considerably adds to the fun) and shares a room with Lois Lane's little sister. In traditional Superman fashion she leads a double life: when she's at school we see her as school girl in green school uniform, when she's off on her mission to retrieve the power ball she's a cape wearing, flying superhero determined to outwit the her evil enemy Selena who currently is in possession of the object. Helen Slater is gorgeous with long blonde hair and huge baby blues in the title role. She may not be the greatest dramatic actress, but nice to look at she is. Faye Dunaway is equally gorgeous (and a gifted actress to boot) as her evil adversary Selena. Peter Cooke is good fun as Selena's admirer and Kara's schoolmaster. Peter O'Toole is suitably hammy in a rather small supporting role as the ruler of Kara's hometown Argos and Mia Farrow makes a not particularly memorable appearance as her mother. It's all a bit of mindless fun and light entertainment for a rainy weekend. Nice to see an 80s take on powergirls (and women). And I have to commend the male actors in it for going along with the fun and allowing their characters to be the equivalent of the ditzy blonde bimbos traditionally played by women. Sit back and enjoy.

This film has had a fare share of bad reviews and publicity but I don't think it's fair.
This film has had a fare share of bad reviews and publicity but I don't think it's fair and justifiable. I watched this as a child long before Superman so it is part of my memories and remembering loving it so much, thanks to Faye Dunaway's performance and good use of humor. I agree, it's not in the same league as Superman, but it's much more entertaining than Superman III which I got bored with half way through. With this it's fun throughout and found it is refreshing that all the female characters are strong and individualistic rather than damsels in distress (Louis Lane) and the flying sequences are much more believable in this movie than the first Superman because of the advance in technology in the 80's. Also, people discredit Helen Slater's wonderful performance. This was not only her first film, but also a starring role. And beautifully shows the differences in character of Kara and Linda Lee. Unlike Superman who has lived on Earth most of his life, Kara has just come. Therefore audience may have been baffled as to why Helen's performance makes it look like she's puzzled all the time, that's because she's growing and learning throughout the film (It's basically a coming-of-age film) and I think the score is wonderful by Jerry Goldsmith. Sorry for the long comment and hope you find it useful. It is worth the watch.

SUPERGIRL BLURAY
The positives first....The BLURAY is excellent. Good clear picture, lovely colour, good sound (though the music tends to be much louder than the dialogue - maybe keep the remote handy), good subtitles, and extras as listed here (not seen by me). Helen Slater? An excellent choice. A luminous, almost etherial beauty, with acting talent, although still inexperienced and it did show in some scenes, but mostly, a good performence. Some good SFX for the time, and Jerry Goldasmith's music. The negatives?....The SCRIPT!! Come on, let's face it, it is a very poor, sometimes silly script that makes Dunnaway and particularly Vaccaro, appear either completely mad, or utterly useless. Dunnaway is allowed to go full steam - 100% without any seeming directorial discipline. Maybe I am wrong, and everyone was happy!! The casting. Peter Cook?? What happened? He can, and often did, steal any film he was in, but here he looks unhappy with his script and delivers a very subdued performence. Then there is Hart Bochner (no, me neither). Who thought he could be a romantic lead for "SuperGirl"? Not his fault. Again the script. He is unshaven, crude, and has a matchstick he chews on. Why cast Farrow and Ward as mum and dad. Utterly wasted. One more positive (for me anyway) O'Toole livens things up and brings much needed gravitas to a disapointing film. Was Swarc the right director? Maybe not. The Bluray is a 5 star job, but I'm sorry, for me the film was only worth 3 stars and that was because I enjoyed Slayer's performence. Do remember...all this (most of it) is just my opinion, but together with all the 5 star reviews, just might help a prospective buyer, not familiar already with the film.

Super duper Supergirl
I’ll be quite honest, I really like this movie, it’s fun, frivolous and just great to see with a wonderful soundtrack. Sure I get it’s not brilliant, it’s a couple of hours of throw away your brain and just switch off enjoyment. So I was excited to get the blu ray at a bargain price. It’s a great little disc, with simply a trailer and the good old vintage documentary that is often included. I remember watching that on TV when it first aired. If you, like me, like this kind of 80s superhero hokiness, then at the right price this is a great bargain.

I was disappointed with this movie, grounded in silly plot lines and inane dialogue. The narrative lacks cohesive pacing with elements of mystical magic thrown in to add slow pacing. A badly written script ruined the entire movie and the ending was forgettable. The movie flew flat on its back.
