Complex Analysis: a Self-Study Guide

This text is very useful, in my opinion.

The book's title implies it is a beginner's book and for self study. But the book assumes a lot of math knowledge, and has no detailed friendly explanations on the concepts. This is a good math book, but it would have been better if it was more explanatory on the basic concepts since it is titled as "Self Study Guide". I have been looking for math books with more detailed and friendly explanations on the concepts and applications into real world. But it is difficult to find math books in that category. The search for such math books continues.

No use to me at all. Tiny grey text on a white background. I could barely read it with a magnifier. Straight to the recycle bin it goes. Why the font is never included in the standard book number I’ll never know.

It is possible to teach complex variables at varying levels of difficulty. The author clearly states in the introduction that this book is intended for the "hobbyist". That being said two years of calculus with theory and a real analysis supplement are really required. The first chapter is a nice review of basic complex numbers. Some excercises are provided with solutions in the back of the book but clearly supplementary additional excercises are required if your knowledge of addition complex numbers, subtraction, division, Euler's formula, DeMoivre's formula is , and exponential functions is rusty. It is very nice that there are solutions to the excercises included. Chapter 2 the review of series and theorems is very complete, but more examples would be very helpful. I have not read the rest of the book yet, but will amend my review in the future. The availability of primers with solutions is a beautiful idea. A primer for complex variables with solutions for beginners would be wonderful. Such a book should include code for Mathematica, MatLab, Python, etc. with excercises. The geometry is helpful. This book is not for beginners in complex variables. This is a beautiful work, but it is really a review of the theory of complex variables for the advanced hobbyist. As the author states if you hope to understand the solution for the Riemann Hypothesis, you have to have a strong foundation. This book tests your foundation.

This book is as described by the author. Detailed proofs of the key theorems at the center of complex function theory. Of course, understanding those theorems is important. But, for me, almost as important is seeing and understanding the techniques used in those proofs. Studying those techniques carefully should give you the skills to follow other complex analysis proofs. A five star book.
