Marvel's Doctor Strange [Blu-ray] [2016]

Good film

SPOILER ALERT A visual treat, possibly the best 3D blu-ray so far, barring Mad Max Fury Road, another spectacular rip-roaring ride. Visually, its starting point is Inception with all those bendy buildings looping over on themselves, crossed with a ton of eye-popping Mandelbrot sets, and total liberties taken with the laws of physics as they should be in a work of fantasy. The spine of the story is the genesis of Doctor Strange, born out of the ashes of his old self, a brilliant but arrogant surgeon whose hands get smashed up when he crashes his Ferrari/Lamborghini/Mazerati ... look, it's a fast car, innit? How can he repair the damage and carry on working when he is the only surgeon in the world who could restore his broken hands to health? Enter Katmandu, sensibly, an unspoilt city rarely used for movie locations. But the authorities agreed on this occasion and the place is one of the stars of the film. With the help of a spiritual guide, the Ancient One, Strange is soon tapping his power, astral planing and visiting other dimensions. He finally challenges the Big Bad which wants to destroy all other dimensions including Earth. He does this with a MASSIVE nick from Doctor Who's best ever episode, Heaven Sent; beautifully done but breath-taking in its cheek. The Doctor Strange movie release was preceded by a bitter controversy surrounding the yellowface casting of one of its main characters: the Ancient One. Shaven-headed, doe-eyed Tilda Swinton is small, cold and brittle, and lends little to the role, laughably rendered part Celtic in this cinematic launch of the Marvel comic. As with Matt Damon in The Great Wall, the world is deformed even more radically than in the movie's inter-dimensional sequences in presenting white characters as saviours of East Asians. Puh-lease! All the West ever did was nick their tea industry, mass produce gargantuan quantities of opium in Bengal (also nicked) and force it on the Chinese population at the point of a gun, so all this heroic whitewashing just annoys. Hugely. Fake history. Sad. Please stop. It is baffling why the character couldn't have remained East Asian as he was in the comics. The usually irritating Benedict Cumberbatch channels Hugh Laurie in House to give his best performance yet. You wait for one Benedict and then two come along at once. In this, the only movie I can think of starring two Benedicts, Benny Wong has scored himself another ace franchise that should keep him busy for a few years. Much more satisfying than his Marco Polo series which ran out of steam early on. Can't wait for the next one.

Dr Strange master of the mystic arts formerly Dr Stephen Strange surgeon a man so arrogant and up himself he was detestable but utterly brilliant.Following an accident his hands are destroyed and he can no longer operate.So begins the adventure in one of the best Marvel films yet.He is put on to a possible cure available in a far off Eastern land known as Kamar-Taj.He is in the course of the (no spoilers) trained to confront his own demons and battle dark forces that want to destroy the world.Pretty much like a lot of super hero movies but this is a lot different than most.Benedict Cumberbatch is as good as we have come to expect even if one cant help thinking of Sherlock Holmes in some of his characterisation.He is well served with the rest of the cast namely Chitwell Ejiofor as one of the mystics teaching him the ropes and Tilda Swinton as the shaven headed top honcho with the unfortunate name of The Ancient One but she is plenty tough I can tell you.The lovely Rachel McAams is somewhat wasted as Stranges ex although she does have a few neat lines spread out.I think she will be more rounded in any sequel.The chief villain played by Mads Mikkelson is not really villainous enough and there is a deleted scene that would have been best left in to show his badness.The effects are absolutely mindboggling.I don't know what an LSD trip was like but I can imagine it was something like this.Dr Strange was never my favourite comic book character but it makes a much better movie than comic.I did have to shake my head at first to accept Tilda Swinton in the role that in the comics was a real ancient one in the form of a wrinkled old oriental guy.There are no f words or gore and in fact I would say that the movie may have been better with a 15 certificate to toughen it up but you cant have everthing.There is an element of humour also throughout which was a nice touch.The Blu-ray disc is brilliant and there are some nice extras and sneak peaks to keep fans happy.A rewarding experience.

Well worth a watch!

Stephen Strange is the worlds best neurosurgeon and a wild free thinker. Does what he wants. A car accident causes him to lose his use of hands with no hope of fixing. Looking for new ways he goes to far off land for help. Ends up finding secret society of magic and sorcery he does not believe in. He however gets drawn in and becomes the most powerful sorcerer on Earth. Then dark evil sorcerers trying to destroy life get into crazy wild magical war with him. INSANE action and effects in this war for all life in many dimensions. VERY FUN, but must pay attention. Excited for # 2.

I found the Blu-Ray version to be better than the 4K UHD version.
