how do you know when you have filtered all 1000L through this - does something change colour so you know to purchase a new one?

It stops filtering, you can't drink any more. No water will come through

It's actually 4000 litres. From the FAQ on their websitre: " Yes, both the LifeStraw Go 2-stage and the LifeStraw Universal use the same filter and our 2-stage replacement filters can be used with either product. Both filters have a lifespan of 4000L or 1000 gallons. The claim of 1000L or 264 gallons for the LifeStraw Go 2-stage is from when we stated the minimum tolerance level of our testing rather than the actual lifespan that was achieved during both internal and external lab testing. You can be confident that either product will live up to our updated claim of 4000L or 1000 gallons. "

Can you use this to fill a bottle with clean water? Or can you only drink when you're next to the water source?

Hi. You can drink from the water source or fill bottles/containers at water source, then drink from them via the Straw whenever needed. They are great, I have drunk from muddy puddles without any bits or 'flavour', so well worth the money. Weigh very little too!
