Oh My God Charlie Darwin

This turned out to be one of my favorite albums in 2009. A very solid set of great tunes. I've heard people throw in comparisons to Tom Waits, Springsteen, CSN, and various "Americana" and alt-country bands, but Low Anthem manages to create a sound of their own by combining many styles. The result is a fabulously cohesive album with stellar songs such as "Ohio". Can't wait to hear more from this fine band.

I've really come to appreciate this groups style-sense in their music writing, their sound and their cohesiveness in musicianship with this album. Great buy.

I bought it mainly for the Charlie Darwin song and really enjoy that and the rest of the CD is pretty good as well.

This album has an eclectic collection of their music. Got it on vinyl and the richness of the sounds is amazing! Definitely check this out. My favoirte o nthis is Champion Angel - be ready to dance! Rest of the album is more mellow, but just as good. The more I listen, the more I like!

I learned about this group from a news story on MSN about favorite state musicains. I purchased it without hearing any of the songs all the way through and I love it. It is magical, mystical and a sound that I cant quite describe but it hovers in the back of my mind, like something I knew a long time ago.

Want something a little different? OMGCD delivers great soulful music, with some songs that really have a punch. I didn't really know what to expect with this one. Saw the band at the end of David Letterman show and became curious. Check out the songs samples.

Excellent album

Haunting music, really atmospheric. Great traveling music when you're headed west across the the flatland. Full moon, stars, and the wolf howling (if you live in Minnesota). Wonderful compositions. Simple, yet the arrangements intrigue.

A haven from the world and her decay... - Indie-folk wird Low Anthems Musik genannt, Multiinstrumentalisten aus Rhode Island, sowas von multi-mega-multi auch die songs. In den Expeditionen, die headder Ben Knox Miller unternimmt - allein durch seine Stimme - , segelt er nahe an Bob Dylans Gefilden , reibt sich an den Granitfelsen von Neil Young, ruht am weissen weichen Strand von Simon and Garfunkel. Fürs Seelenheil auf der - HMS Beagle - sorgen Chorgesänge a la Fleet Foxes und Gospelherrlichkeit beim Stück - OMGCD -... Doch zuvor streichelt Miller beim opener - CHARLIE DARWIN - mit Falsett und Akoustikgitarre eine pflegende Portion Seelenbalsam auf angespannte Nerven, - Oh my god, it s all around you, oh my god, life is cold and formless -, Textzeile. ( Bright Eyes - Dejavu ). Slippin away bei - TO OHIO -, ach würde Folk sich doch immer so anhören, ich würd kaum was anderes an meine Ohren, Seele, Bauch lassen... Ein song wie Milch und Honig, nur schön ! Wundervoll akoustisch, zart gepickte Gitarre, dezentenste Bläser, Stimme nur leicht angeraut und kehlig, schöne warm-wohlfühlige harmonische Melodie... Da will man nicht mehr raus aus diesem Traum, weiterträumend in Morpheus Armen von einer erblühten Waldlichtung im Frühling, eine Nymphe im weissen Kleid da sitzen sehend, ( hier Jocie Adams, klassische Komponistin) selbstvergessend auf der Flöte spielend. Eben ein Traumsong - TICKET TAKER -. Doch was nützt das schönste - eingelulltsein - wenn man adhoc im Saloon abhängen soll, Steve Earle und Tom Waits Whiskey saufend im Kreuz hat, hört man - THE HORIZON IS A BELTWAY - und Toms cover - HOME I LL NEVER BE - , tschüss Seeligkeit, welcome to square- linedance oder zu sonstigen groovigen Aktionen, Fiddel, Harmonika, Banjo in kernigster Interpretation. Ryan Bingham -fans wirds nicht schrecken, die lieben hier Millers Stimme, die er wohl dafür im rauchigen Eichenfass gebeizt hat. Um so erfreuter und erfüllter wird es in den Simon and Garfunkel Jüngern klingen bei - CAGE THE SONGBIRD -, erstaunt auch noch, wieder wegen der wandelbaren Stimme eines Musikstudenten. Nochdazu macht er Onkel Bob bei - DON T TREMBLE - keine Schande, im Gegenteil, Stimme nicht schneidend, verhaltener und Harmonika nicht zu quietschig, das Verhältnis zueinander stimmt, ist stimmig. Fast countryesk wie ein roadsong steigert sich das treibende, kernige - CHAMPION ANGEL -. Balladig, sehnsüchtig, melancholisch, das Grau subtil übergehend in ein zart Rose und Bleu bei - TO THE GHOSTS...-. Und welch ein schönes Abschiedsgeschenk , das tiefenwirkendste Lied - TO OHIO - again, extended version... Echt Leute, danke für dieses Album, man muss jetzt nicht mal so low down sein, um das zu brauchen und zu geniessen. Danke für euer Mitgefühl, für alle, nicht nur für Charles Darwin - was hätte der dazu gesagt ? I Low Anthem il loro angolo in paradiso se lo sono senza dubbio già guadagnato grazie a questo album e al successivo "Smart flesh". Incredibili cesellatori di armonie senza tempo, autenteci depositari di tradizioni rurali antiche come il loro paese, Ben Knox Miller e compagni hanno dato nuovo vigore al folk contemporaneo. E se il sucessivo "Smart.. " rappresenta l'anima più intimista della band questo "oh my god..." è in grado ogni tanto di mostrare i muscoli con sferzate elettriche di esaltante vigore pur mantenendo le sue indubbie radici country folk. E musica senza tempo questa che esalta la tradizione americana attraverso la contemporaneità, che smitizza l'idea del country soporifero e sdolcinato. "To Ohio" e "Champion angel", "Horizon is a beltway" sono i nuovi inni alla grandezza del suono americano.

The slow and the bippety-boppety - and the openning track will squeeze tears of life affirmation from places you didn't even know still existed on that aching body of yours.

This is a really beautiful CD. I only came across Low Anthem recently, hearing it on a television programme as background music but I love it so much I intend collecting everything they have done. Well worth having.
