Original Atmel Dip-8 ATTINY85-20PU Tiny85-20Pu Ic Chip Pack Of 5Pcs: desertcart.com: Industrial & Scientific Review: Good quality - not counterfit - These were legit and worked from what I can tell. Review: Exactly what I ordered - They arrived in perfect condition. Loaded one of them in a programer and everything went as expected. They are all preloaded with 1Mhz Internal boot loaded so if you are going to flash it with the expectation of another MHz level be sure to upload the proper boot loader.. Its easy.. just select that in the IDE.. If you have not gotten your driver all worked out in the past this can be a bit of a trial and error item... On windows something I had missed was changing the driver selection on the right side to "libusb-win32" so heads up on that. It was not obvious to me so I had to reread and make a bit of a leap on that idea.. the images and text don't point this out. Anyway.. these are good quality and for me at least they were packed and shipped in a good way that they arrived in excellent shape. Note that I use the "flashtree USB Tiny AVR Programmer FabIsp" programer. Incase you are trying to decide which one of those to pick up.

works pretty well
i have only loaded a bootloader and the blink program on these chips, just to make sure they work. other than that, not much to say at this point. i should mention that the seller is shipping Tiny85-20U chips, rather than Tiny85-20PU, so the description is incorrect.

Nicely packaged!
Not much to say other than the price point was good at almost $16 when I got them and is even better now at sub $14. Since receiving I've used two of these and both worked as expected. To be upfront, I haven't tested the other three but don't expect any problems. The Packaging is very good but I wont say great. The small plastic box is excellent but I don't like it when ICs are shipped in bubble wrap. The pins are much more likely to get bent when shipped in bubble wrap, especially if tape is involved (not in this case however). It would be first class packaging if they'd used conductive IC foam inside the plastic box.

Great for Arduino Uno project minimization
Used these to minimize an Arduino Uno project and it worked really well. Tested four of the five so far with no failed units. If you are planning on using the PWM pins, be aware this chip seems to be able to push more power to one pin than splitting it between the two pins. I had better luck hooking up all four LEDs to one pin than two on each pin. Not sure why this is, but I am just getting into the project minimization scene, so there may be a reason for this. I’ll definitely be buying more of these for future projects.

Go TINY or Go Home
If you want to work with a tiny microcontroller sans development board with extremely limited resources then pick up the ATTINY85 (or any ATTINY). I don't recommend this for beginners as development boards offer many other features in working with a microcontroller. You'll need another device to actually program this such as any development board with serial-to-USB interface or you can buy a simple serial-to-USB programmer where you can mount the ATTINY. This exists both because it's tiny and because it offers a unique challenge to work with such a limited microcontroller -- there are tons of programming libraries developed specifically for the ATTINY and its limitations.

Shipping method stinks, but 5 chips worked
The shipping entailed putting 5 of these IC chips into a small plastic baggie, then shipped in an Amazon envelope. As a result, all of them showed bent pins. It wasn't difficult to straighten them. I installed a bootloader onto all 5 of them successfully, they all accepted a sketch, and it ran as expected. (I believe if you want to have them run at 8MHz it's just a setting to make on the arduino options menu. However, I used millis() timing on my 2 sketches, and I think they were out of synch. I adjusted the millis() 'delay' time in my code and they ran very well at their native 1MHz.

Will order more soon, but be careful of the black-on-black pin 1 marker dot
Once you get the hang of programming these ATTINY85-20PU chips -- I use SparkFun Tiny AVR Programmer (PGM-11801 -- I find these chips really useful. One must be careful, though: I burned out two of these 'tiny85s' because I put the chip in rotated 180 degrees into the AVR programmer because it is difficult to discern the dot which marks pin 1. When rotated 180 degrees what happens is that the pin 4 becomes pin 8 leading the ground pin (pin 4) being connected to +5V and pin 8 (the +5V pin) being connected to ground!! NOT GOOD. INSTANT DEATH of CHIP. CHIP and PROGRAMMER BECOME HOT. Recommend filling the black-on-black hole with white paint or nail polish before putting into circuit this way you'll easily be able to discern which pin is pin 1.
