Does it drain automatically or do you have a degree of control over water spillage?

There is an overflow hole that once the reservoir is full it will spill onto the ground. If you want to channel the water you can get some plactic PVC tube and feed into overflow hole. This will drain the excess water to wherever you like.

Can i leave the bed covered? or does it have to stay uncovered. i am concerned about squirrels digging in the garden if it is left uncovered.

You can leave cover on & closed if it is in full sun. I would generally open it late morning & close before 5:00 pm to keep birds & critters out. Note though I only grew lettuces so far & started them in August 2020. I also bought the plastic cover for protection during cold & snow being in Northeast Ohio. Ready to start onions & lettuces & going to leave plastic cover on for another month.

When the cover is in the open position, what would the depth of the vegepod be? I want to allow enough room for it to open against the house.

You need a minimum of 2 feet(60cm) to open the cover fully behind. Also you can hinge the cover off whatever side you like - so can be placed against a wall and opened from the side.
