We live very near the Canadian border, and have snow on the ground 4-5 months straight in the winter. Coming from a place where I'd never made a fire in my life.... it was a whole new world to me. I had never even seen a wood stove! In our first winter, I set off the smoke alarm dozens of times. Making a fire was a struggle every single day. By the second winter, I began to smarten up and do some research. The process got easier but I still made a lot of mistakes. I tried three different fire starters (one of the cardboard-like ones, and two different "coil" types, like this product). This product was by far the best, and now we buy six boxes each year in the off-season (they are cheaper in the summer and on Prime Day). We don't let our fire burn all night, so I make a BRAND NEW FIRE EVERY DAY. Yes, every day. I'd estimate I make about 150 fires each year during the winter season. This is my process: I use a piece of newspaper (shredded down and crumbled up), 4-5 small kindling sticks, 4 very small pieces of firewood, and one of these fire starters. I have added a video showing the process. These fire starters have never let me down.
