Currently, our Djeco game family fav
Of the 5 Djeco games we have, this is definitely the favorite (I think it's replaced our original family fav, Piou Piou).Great strategy game in which you have to build a pirate ship (you can have up to 4 players) but have to avoid the pirates who will take your ship and gold! So much fun - both my 7YO and 10YO love it; I've also played it with a 4 year old and she got the game too. My husband and I enjoy playing it too.I guessing that the Djeco game with a witch on the cover is very similar (you build a castle and there are fairies involved with that one) so that's an option too if your kids might not like the pirate theme or prefer fairies or what have you...Other Djeco games we have:Piou Piou (strategy game) ***** (sooooo much fun - much quicker than this one!)Pipolu (bluffing game) ****1/2 (great but not as good as Piou Piou or Piratatak)Sakapuss (game of speed) ***1/2 (good but not the best of the lot - first part is more fun than the second part)Sardines (memory game) *** (our least fav but it's a good game. Would make for a great birthday party game for a small party)All of these games are GREAT.

Shiver Me Timbers!
Arrr! My kids (7 and 4) love it. It's easy to take along, it's easy to explain to new players, and the game play is novel enough to be interesting. (So many other kids' card games are basically either Matching or Go Fish under a thin disguise.)The game play can also be a little maddening, because although there is some strategy involved, there is mainly a lot of luck. Fairly often, one player will draw one boat piece after another (sometimes winning the game before anyone else gets the chance to play), while the next player gets stuck with a pirate on their first draw. The concept of buying boat pieces from other players is also easily defeated, because there are so many occasions to get desirable pieces out of your hand (you can discard three cards when you draw a pirate). Nonetheless, after six months we still get requests to play this on a weekly basis.

Such a good game !
I offered this game to a 5 years old boy. Of course, it was not immediately his prefered game (compared to robots and other monsters) but his parents took the game for a flight to Paris and they are so happy. Their little boy loves this game, he plays now with his friend and it is a hit. Because of the size, they have this game with them all the time, it helps when they have to wait at a restaurant...Update December 2014: we were offered this year piratatak ! My girls (5 years old) and their friends (Boys and girls) love it. It was a hit for Christmas, even adults love it. It is such a good introduction to board game and strategy. Do not hesitate, this game is very good fun and educational in the same time .

Fantastic family game!
We LOVE this game! We've had it for a few weeks, and it's already a classic fave. My son, who is just 5, got the rules of the game within one round. He needs a bit of propping towards strategy (and a reminder that 'we don't always win', but overall, the game is tons of fun, easy to play, definitely suitable for the age-range listed and perfect for toting around while travelling because it's just a small-ish deck of cards. Each round takes 10-20 minutes, I'd say, and things can change a lot depending how you draw, so it always keeps you on your toes. We LOVE Djeco!!!! "No pirate, no pirate, no pirate!"

Kids loved it
I purchased this for my (bright) 5-yr old, right before a vacation. He and his 8-yr old brother have enjoyed it quitea bit and wanted to play it several times a day. It is simple in concept and quick to play. The game is mostly luckwith a tiny bit of strategy thrown in (but very little). Short and fun, definitely worth the $10. The solid cardboardstorage box is a nice addition, instead of normal paperboard.

Hidden Gem: 4 year old and 6 year old boys love it
My boys LOVE this game. It has been one of our most-used Christmas presents. But adults love it too! It's perfect for pre-readers or language barriers (no words) and easy to understand. It has cannons and pirates (increasing the little boy love). The winner must assemble a pirate ship from 6 pieces (like a puzzle). But the players must also count gold coins to buy and sell. The box is super sturdy, a major plus in my eyes (spent time yesterday taping up a game board for another game we have.) The cards are sturdy as well. We have taken this to friends' houses, on trips (it's small) and all have enjoyed. Excellent product.

Great game for a young child who isn't as proficient ...
Great game for a young child who isn't as proficient at reading words/letters/numbers as us adults. My four year old son loves this game. There's not a whole lot of strategy to it, you have a pretty fair chance of just randomly playing and winning, this helps give disadvantaged players an advantage. For older kids and adults, this game would become repetitive and boring quite quickly. For younger kids, it's a ton of fun building a pirate ship, and the simple nature of the game lets them pick up on it.I only have one complaint. How do you pronounce the name? Pee-rah-tah-tack? Pie-rat-a-talk? Pirate-talk-talk?

One of our favorite card games, comes along on all trips
Such a fun game for kids and grownups alike. Has strategic elements (how many pirates were played?0 as well as elements of luck (how many cards will you dare to take before you get a pirate?) that add spice to the game.
