Perfect replacement for old unit. Was priced well and delivered on time. Easy to fit and works well.

I’m genuinely impressed with the FireAngel SW1 R mains powered smoke alarm. The build quality is exceptional and it performs significantly well, definitely a product you can trust to keep your home safe. That said, if you’re replacing an older smoke alarm from a different brand, be aware that this model may leave some gaps around the ceiling and could require replastering to get a neat finish. You can see this clearly in my photos. For another room, I discovered that the same company offers a standalone push fit base product. It’s much easier to secure, fills gaps left by older alarms, and makes removing the smoke alarm simpler than with the standard plate. It’s worth considering this option if you want a smoother installation. All that said, the SW1 R is a great product at a good price. It’s reliable, well made, and definitely does what it promises. Just make sure you consider the points above regarding installation, ceiling gaps, and alternatives, it will save you hassle in the long run.

The mains powered FireAngel detectors have no space for making the hard-wired connection in their out-of-box mounting arrangement, relying on you being able to terminate the supplied flying leads into you wiring within the ceiling void. This is a very handy and inexpensive accessory that replaces the provided base with a much deeper one that allows for the cables to be terminated within the base. Works well for this function but is deeper that it strictly needs to be making this, combined with the actual detector, quite an ugly unit. The snap-fit connection of the detector to this base means you will need a screwdriver to prise the tabs apart if you need to take the detector off at any point; the tabs look like they can be easily broken. If you need it, then it is great but could have been designed a lot better!
