Review: A good blu ray 3D and a great film! - I don't think this film is as bad as people are saying. Its not Pixars best film but is still really good. The 3D in this blu ray isn't that bad, nothing really sticks out much but there is depth and everything is easy to see despite the fast pace. There is a seance of speed in the film which Pixar has managed to capture really well; usually in films trying to portray speed it doesn't really do a good job. On the whole a good 3D blu ray and a very nice film which most people will enjoy. Review: Film - Great thanks

Cars 2
I took my 6 year old son to the cinema to see this film and he was glued to the screen all the way through, it was colourful and fast moving which was perfect for my son who tends to bore easily. I have to say I'm quite surprised at the negative response this film has had, its good fun and definitely one for the Kids!!

Not a bad story, but for another film...
If I split this review into two parts, that will make it easier to understand my thoughts. Technically, the presentation of this film is superb. The animation of PIXAR is captured beautifully by the resolution capabilities of Bluray and the rich depth that they introduce into their productions is stunning. Also, the 3D is very good too. Disney/Pixar clearly 'get' that the 3D does not need to have things flying out of the screen at you to be good. You can do that in a 3D film of course...but that is a sure fire path to eye-strain and headaches and is nothing more than a parlour trick really. The real genius about using 3D well, is utilise it to give real depth to a frame. You give the viewer the illusion that you are looking out of a window, out into a deep and vast landscape of real, solid objects in a real open space. That is something that James Cameron also 'got' with AVATAR. In both of these films, they throw in the odd 'in your face' 3D tricks, but they never intrude too far into your living room/theatre and so did not over work your eye muscles. All the usual, superbly high quality presentation from Disney then. Walt Disney discs (be they DVD or Bluray) are usually always placed at a slightly higher price point, and with justifiable reason. Their stuff is always amongst the best of any item I have ever bought in the home media environment, and I do mean ever, even going back to the dim-and-now-distant days when I used to pre-order the latest Disney VHS titles for my sister (dear lord...pre-ordering VHS titles, did I really do that?). As to actual story. Oh dear. Allow me to elaborate a little, it's not a bad story as such...a PIXAR animated spy adventure...no it could have been a great little film, if they had decided to do that. Instead, they shoe-horned the idea into the CARS world. And that was a big mistake. Firstly, like all good films, CARS sure as doo-doo did not need a sequel. It was a done thing, that friendship, honour and loyalty meant more than winning Winning WINNING!! McQueen realised that, for all his simpler, slower and 'country' ways, that 'Mater was actually happy. Job's done! For him to now take several steps backward and deride his friend in public and try to elevate himself in JAPAN is just one overly obvious plot contrivance too far, it is clearly done to separate McQueen from 'Mater solely to allow the story to happen. In CARS, this separation of McQueen from his team mates happen believably, due to a realistic series of mistakes by his overly tired drive 'Mack' but here it has to happen to allow 'Mater to become the 'man inside'. McQueen's growth in the first film means that you know that these simple country ways are just one of the things he loves about his friend, there is not any pretence in 'Mater, so to suddenly re-notice his ways and them suddenly becoming an embarrassment to him is ludicrous! But as it's only put there to make the separation possible, it makes the whole story seem forced and implausible. Great presentation of a rather poor sequel, shame. Possibly PIXAR's first real failure?

I'll stay out of the argument about what it's appropriate to show your kids, as I was only allowed to watch the Disney Channel as a kid and eagerly looked forward to staying with a babysitter so I could watch the "cool" cartoons the other kids liked to watch. I also happen to think that no one should show something to their kids just because it's by Disney/Pixar and rated G, but I digress. I watched this film right after the first a few days ago, and I'm again impressed by it in absolutely every way. Pixar managed to keep the world and characters from the first film, and create a film with a COMPLETELY different theme and feel. For anyone who thought the first Cars film was too slow, there's more action in the first half hour of this film than the whole of the first Cars combined. The jokes, the camera-work, the visual fidelity (WAAAAY more color this time around), and the variety of characters and settings have all been cranked way up to 11. There isn't really much of a story aside from again one of friendship and finding your usefulness in a world you don't understand, and sticking by your friends, but that doesn't matter because there's so many thrills to be found. From a design viewpoint this might be the greatest Pixar film ever, with more incredible gadgets and clever uses for them than any other Pixar film I've ever seen. Literally this film keeps your eyes glued to the screen just to see what crazy visual gag or feat you will see next. Parents will want to tread lightly if they're showing this to a kid who should be playing with large building blocks and coloring books instead of watching TV, but just about everyone else who likes their cartoons action-packed and filled with motion, color, and cleverness with love this film. And yes, there's some fridge-horror when you realize that every one of those cars that gets zapped, explodes, or is thrown into the sea is DEAD! ....Shudders....

Magnifique.
