Great collection of episodes for newcomers to the Golden Age of Radio
I confess that I was a complete newcomer to what some refer to as the "Golden Age of Radio", so this collection was my first introduction to the many classics from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. As such this serves as a great introduction to some of the big names from that era. It consists of 12 different shows, each being an episode of about half an hour long, making up half a dozen hours of entertainment in total. Each show includes messages from sponsors, many of which are incorporated into the show itself, and these in themselves provide a fascinating glimpse in to the culture of America in the era in the early to mid 1900s. The accompanying music also says something about that time, and helps bring you back to the American households that first gathered around their radios to listen to these broadcasts. While the majority of the episodes are mystery and detective stories, three are comedies. My favourite is the Amos and Andy Show episode "Orchids Mix-Up" (1944), which is charmingly told and has a delightful twist at the end. Also good was the Our Miss Brooks episode "Who's Going Where?" (1955), which is witty, and also reflects the more polished performances that were becoming more common in the 1950s. But the real heart of this collection lies in the mystery and detective stories. One of the best is the opener, "The Lazarus Caper" (1948), from The Adventures of Sam Spade. Many of the episodes feature spine-tingling tales of suspense and murder, such as Escape's "Confession" (1947), Inner Sanctum Mysteries "The Lonely Sleep" (1945), Suspense's "The Man Who Knew How" (1944), and The Whistler's "Conspiracy" (1948). It's a great audio collection to listen to while on the road or travelling, and has certainly made me interested in listening to more from this era. - GODLY GADFLY (July 2017)
