The best in linking complexity and human capability
We have many theories on strategy and complexity. But no understadings regards how these links to human capability. Jaques explains and shows how to connect complexity to human work. And his understanding of human work is particular and clarifying - human work has to do with uncertainty. People in a managerial hierarchies has to deal with different degrees of uncertainty and Jaques shows it in a very organized and deep way. I think that there nothing better than this available in all managerial books available. A classic.

This work is immensely influential and practical. It underpins a number of corporate philosophies and influences many elements of how leaders should think about running and structuring their organisations.

The key to organizational success
This is Elliott Jaques' description on how an organization should be structured so that the people are properly matched to their assignments, and are happy and productive doing their work. I am a huge fan of Elliott's work and I highly recommend this for any management team truly interested in making their organization the best it can be.

Good Historical Reference
Appropriate information for those who are fans of fairly rigid, formulaic models of organizational management. May be a good starting point for managers who need to acquire historical perspective on this topic. And that may be its place. Since the time this volume was published, organizations and their management methods have changed. Management layers have been reduced, significantly more employees are assigned to each individual manager, the fabric of manager/employee relationships has been disrupted by computer-based employee management. I cannot recommend this well-written, highly detailed book to those who are interested in effective employee management in today's environment.

Some really good thinking on organizational design and theory
Some really good thinking on organizational design and theory. Not new and fancy stuff that only works for a company or 2, but rather the fundamental thinking all companies should be reviewing and following on a regular basis.

Bad book, bad science
I couldn't finish this book. It is full of old-fashioned management 1.0 thinking. Examples: The higher the manager the better his capabilities should be. Managers are the only ones qualified to do performance appraisals. Only managers should be allowed to hire people. Etc... My biggest problem with the book is that it claims to be based on science, which is nonsense. The insights from complexity science and systems thinking reveal totally different needs. For example, the author claims we need accurate definitions of terminology in business, just like in physics. But from science we know this to be impossible. The more complex the system the fuzzier the terminology will be. There's no way around that. Terminology in social systems is necessarily the fuzziest. I give the book 2 stars because there are a few quotes that I liked. For example, "We can agree to be creative and innovative. But the question is how to create the conditions to make it possible to be so." That's one of the few pieces of text I could agree with. Oh, and the style of writing is terrible. The text consist of nearly a billion bullet points.

Some books unpack a single insight across a couple hundred pages. This book is not like that. In here is the density of insight only attained by someone of great intellect over decades of real-world experience. It demands much of the reader; this is not a book for casual browsing, but rather a reference manual to read over and over by those with sufficient capacity. It is a joy and an inspiration to read.
