First, I guess you need to know something about them, "The beautiful ones. The flawless four. Everyone wanted to be them. You know 'em". They went to your school, too. First there's Courtney "Satan-in-heels" Shayne (Rose McGowan) and her pawn, the dense but dangerous Marcie Fox (Julie Benz), a legend in her own little mind. Then there's angelic Julie Freedman (Rebecca Gayheart), doomed to be popular because of her pretty face, and lastly, the teen-dream herself, Elizabeth Purr. When an ordinary kidnapping prank leaves the future prom queen dead (accidentally gagged with a jaw-breaker), a deadly sweet prank leads to cover-up makeover in this edgy and unpredictable comedy. But there will be no mercy as prom night arrives, bringing this spirited tale to its cruel tiara-dropping conclusion. Review: Wicked good fun - Jawbreaker has cult classic written all over it. It did poorly with critics, gets a 5.x rating on imdb (I swear, all the coolest, and polarizing, cult films fall into this rating), yet has style and attitude for miles. It's a dark comedy with horror elements. This is maybe my favorite Rose McGowan performance. She is stellar, as are the other girls in her clique. But she kind of steals the show. Rebecca Gayheart does look super foxy in a leather skirt. "Mean girl" Courtney and her cohorts abduct one of their own, on her birthday, and throw her in the trunk. Problem is, Courtney popped a jawbreaker in her mouth, duct taped her mouth shut, and it KILLS her! What an awesome soundtrack. Primarily grrrl power alt rock and roll. Veruca Salt plays over the opening credits! And the freaking DONNAS appear in this! Back when they were still the "Donnas". They are young and gawky! They lip sync two songs (kind of poorly) at the high school prom. I would've gone to mine if The Donnas appeared! Review: Oh FERN!! - One of my childhood or should I say teenage favorite movies still is to this day. I don’t care what age you are. You should absolutely watch this movie at least once in your life because you definitely will not regret it!

Rose McGowan, The JawBreaker
This movie is a classic and is one of Rose McGowan's best performances. Even if you don't care for teen movies, you'll like this one. It is a dying breed of movies for sure. The "clique" of the most adored and hated high school girls are made up of 4 bombshells with Rose being the Mastermind of the group. As a Birthday prank, they plot to kidnap the nicest of the group and stuff her full of pancakes and tie her to the football goal. Everything goes awry when Rose gags her with a "Jawbreaker" and stuffs her in the trunk. She chokes and dies. The 3 remaining gals plot a cover-up until class nerd, Fern Mayo, catches the 3 in their scheme. To bribe Fern into not telling, they transform her into one of the "Plastics" of their clique. Fern's newfound popularity thickens the mess and then girl revenge takes over. All is exposed in an all out girl war with no holds barred that will keep you laughing and in suspense. A great Movie destined to become a cult classic.

Delightfully Bad Flick, and That's a Good Thing!
Most might look at this film and see it as a total bomb, but I see it as sinfully delightful in it's badness! It has a style and attitude all it's own within the overbearing genre aimed at teenage/20-somethings. Quick Synopsis: The coolest girls in school, ruled by Courtney (the Queen Bee) decide to play a harmless prank on one of their girlfriends, Liz, for her birthday. Sadly, the prank turned tragic when it resulted in Liz's death -- an occurence that was accidentally witnessed by the nerdiest girl in school, Fern Mayo. Now Courtney and company must strike a deal with Fern (they give her a makeover and help her become beautiful and popular...like them) in order to keep her quiet. This film has a dark comedy quality to it, much like the movie Heathers (THX Version) did. The characters have an odd and quirky manner of speaking, and it makes the dialogue somewhat broken and fascinating at the same time. Rose McGowan shines as the 'Satan-in-heels' Courtney Shayne. The wardrobe and filming sequences are captivating (as usual with teen flicks, there are plenty of slow motion hot chicks strutting down the school hallways). The music fits perfectly with each scene, and compliments the edgy attitude of the movie. Still...one can't help but notice that this movie is certainly not Oscar material. It's appeal is to a very general, young (I'd say about 15-25 age range) female audience. Men might be entertained briefly by it's gorgeous leading ladies in revealing clothing (honesly though, what high schoolers actually dress that way?), but their interest might quickly fade as the thin plot and bizarre story starts to unfold. I have to say that I love this movie. It's fun and twisted at the same time, and even though it's never going to rank high on many "must see" movie lists, it will always have a place on mine. Bottom line, watch it and enjoy it for the somewhat unique film it is...even if you end up thinking it was kind of bad.

Holds Up Against the Test of Time
There was diversity; they did NOT tokenize Tatyana Ali! There were meaningful cinematography and edits! I did kinda hate the occasional side wipe and diagonal fade BUT The end of the movie is something that you see a lot in television and films nowadays to communicate absolute chaos. Lastly, they did not put down feminine women! There's a lot of "pick me's" in female-centralized coming-of-age stories and they allowed the girls to wear skirts while maintaining a personality. It also kind of has a small commentary on white fragility but, y'all ain't ready for that interpretation. PS - There were some awkward moments with acting and scripting BUT the significance of the characters and their symbolism was enough for me to call this a misunderstood film. It was three years after The Craft so, of course, it couldn't fulfill all critics of 1999. Overall, it's still a great story about the pressures of feminity as a girl can lead to a girl uninterrupted.
