Installed as an external hard drive for my Directv Genie
My 4 1/2 year old Directv Genie`s hard drive was failing. Freezing, pixilation, it was well worn from constant use. The older model Genie HR54`s have an eSata connection for connecting an external hard drive. While there are complete externals available, the hard drives installed are most likely standard desktop units. These purple`s are designed for constant power on read/writes, and 5400rpm models run cool. Speed is sufficient, 7200rpm models not needed for DVR`s. I purchased a used G-Technology G-DRIVE 3.5" external enclosure minus it`s hard drive. Popped in a 2TB WD Purple, and for around $100, a complete unit was had. Double my original capacity too. Once connected, the Genie automatically formatted, and configured it. The internal hard drive is now incapacitated, the external taking over. It`s quiet, quick, and all the issues I had have vanished!

Great for replacement or expansion
I have a Lorex NVR for recording security footage. After just a few months the included HHD in the unit died without warning. It was a complete crash. The device was under warranty and the company would not replace the drive, but rather said they would replace the entire unit with a used/refurbished unit and that it would takes weeks. I decided to keep the device and just replace the drive myself so I wasn't without a security system for that long. This drive was on sale and is more than twice the capacity of the other brand of drive it replaced. It is extremely fast when searching for past security footage. If you are looking to replace a security system drive be sure to get one that is properly rated for this task. You can't just use any off the shelf hard drive or you will run into serious issues. These specialty drives exist for a reason, and this brand and model have done an excellent job so far, recording 24/7 for over a year now.

Next best thing to a preamium SSD.
Very easy to upgrade my Lorex NVR Model N843A8. It fit perfectly and worked like a plug and play device. It only requires a quick format after letting the system fully boot up. It started out a bit noisy but quieted down about 20% after a few days of recording. I discovered most of the noise is being made is due to the hard drive being directly mounted to the NVR case which is thin sheet metal that actually amplifies the natural vibration and clicking that spinning hard drives make. I believe this could be resolved by a soft mount, stiffening the case and rerouting the ground the hard drive makes while in contact with the NVR case. I blame the noise on Lorex and not the hard drive for this reason. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because playback doesn't flow in sync with multiple cameras or at real speed, which makes calculating vehicle or aircraft speeds between markers impossible. Sometimes the recorded video playback of multiple cameras do not sync in time and may be separated by just a few seconds. I do however believe this may be a firmware issue with the Lorex NVR but have no way to prove it other than to say the original hard drive did the same thing and that's mainly why it was replaced. It was a good value for the money until the 24 to 36% Trump tariffs kicked in. As an alternative storage method I highly recommend the Samsung 870 QVO SSD.

Great for a home system!
This was the right size HDD at the right price to add to my NVR for my home surveillance system. 2TB gives me enough space to keep everything running with no issues. Works great for a 1080x4 camera system, hopefully for a long time. Recommended if you need robust storage that will be overwritten constantly.

Easy install
When my 1TB Sata drive in my Cobra 8 channel surveillance recorder went out I decided to give this 2TB drive a try and so far it seems to have been a great choice. I unplugged the power and Sata cord and while holding upside down removed four screws holding HD to frame. I reversed the process and fired it up and got a message to format drive which took less than a minute and my cameras came back up. I was shocked I never had to redo my settings or create new password, the recorder was set just as before. Now we hope for longevity.

It's a great HD if it survives shipping
I just installed it yesterday and so far so good but hard drives are very susceptible to damage during shipping if they get bounced around to much so time will tell. So far it's working great. And no that doesn't mean you're at high risk of getting a bad drive, the company does package them very well, It means it's a HD anything can happen. Update.. two and a half months later and it's still working perfectly and I forgot to mention earlier that this was the second purchase Oh, the first one I purchased directly from Western Digitals website and it was Dead on Arrival, as it turns out I had much better luck through Amazon, go figure

Failed in 7 months
Purchased Aug 2025. Installed in video surveillance system but wouldn't work until I tapped it. Started, but noisy. Seemed to work but started noticing unrecorded periods. Mar 2026 it completely fails. Says disk is unformatted and unable to format.

Muy buen disco, muy silencioso, no hace nada de ruido ya que eso es importante en un DVR. Mi disco anterior hacía ruidos como de tortillería.
