Mastering Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO and Exposure: How They Interact and Affect Each Other Review: Very Helpful Book!! - Al Judge, author or photography master? I say both, I have read a couple of his other books and they are all the best of the best. This book, Mastering Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO and Exposure has taught me more than the college-level photography course I took over a year ago. This book should be the textbook for those courses. I was still unclear about many aspects of photography until I found this book. Of course, I took better pictures but I wanted to know what made them better. We can always better ourselves but if we don't know why or how, then we have limits. Al Judge takes away those limits and explains to the reader, very clearly, what kind of effect a certain technique or just a slight change would make to the final product. My pictures always seemed a bit "noisy", but by making better sense of ISO speed, Al has taught me how to correct that problem in such a way that I could actually explain it to someone else. I think that is the best way to judge a book, not just by how you interpret the information, but how you can relay that information to someone else. You can go through and read all of the reviews you want, or you can just buy the book and start taking better pictures right away. Review: Excellent book, but a bit short - A lot of valuable info in here for a newbie like me, but not enough examples. The shortness of the book makes me feel as though it is a collection of magazine articles, rather than a complete book. I would love to see more and will probably follow the author for that purpose. Easy to read, well written.

Helpful and succinct
I have always enjoyed taking pictures, but have never known what the settings meant. I have purchased other books, but never made it all the way through them. After recently purchasing a new camera, I decided to get serious and I thought a good place to start would be this book. The book is geared towards beginners, I think, which is great. It has good photographic examples and charts to explain concepts. He explains the basics and a little beyond, but not so much as to overwhelm. I also like that it is a manageable read. Just when I felt anxious to be done and go take pictures, it was done! I would definitely use this as a stepping stone to more in depth classes.

Fantastic Book With Great Simplified Direct Information
Love this book... Excellent writer, great details, easy to follow information. He has a very direct way of teaching new to intermediate photographers terms & easy to understand information.

For a book that is roughly 75 pages, there is a lot of information, well worth the $3.95 IMHO.
I picked up a copy of this book for $3.95 not to long ago, I thought it was a good price and there were a lot of customer reviews. I always have the option of a refund if I don’t think the book lived up to its promise. Overall, I picked up some helpful tips that I want to try out this coming weekend, --weather permitting. I do mostly landscape and outdoor photography, trying to “capture the moment” on my frequent camping and fishing trips. I want to get better pictures, as what I usually end up with are images with blown out sky and clouds, you know, not much in the way of details. Everything else is dark and also without much detail. For a book that is roughly 75 pages, there is a lot of information, well worth the $3.95 IMHO. Unless you’re a pro, you can’t go wrong picking up a copy of this book.

basic and little outdated
nice book for the price, very basic good for introduction, but it’s a little outdated Maybe a revision would make it better

For the beginner
The book is good but could have included a little more on working with the subject. For example, I would like to have seen described a case where the ISO is set very high to check a low light shot in a reasonable amount of time (DLSR assumed). This would be followed by an example of the calculations to lower the ISO and increase the exposure time for the final shot. This is a dirt-simple conversion but when it's cold and the sun went down an hour ago, well...

Short and SWEET! Bought this for my daughter who is just getting into photography but I also found it very helpful. Zeroing in on the basics of exposure this book is a great, easy to read primer for just about anyone. The real-life examples were great! Would like to see more of those - maybe an entire book with these examples - illustrating various techniques. I'd much rather read a short book describing one person's approach than a large tome explaining all the options. The cameras today are techno-rich and a hard-to-get-through manual is something that sucks the fun right out of a inherently fun activity. Thanks for a concise, helpful (and affordable) book!

This book clearly explains the ins and outs of a modern camera and options for taking good photographs. I found it very useful and it certainly has changed the way I use my camera.

I needed to get my head around the different SLR camera elements (aperture, shutter etc) that are needed to take a good picture as i struggled to get good photos. This book put it into terms that I could understand and and gave me the initial tools to allow me to take photos that looked natural and I was also able to take them reasonably quickly. I was doing this on a family holiday and I wound up with some excellent photos that didn't impact on time with the family. I will be reading it again as there is a lot to learn from it and it isn't a long read. Nice work.
