Takes a bit of getting used to.
Up until recently, I used an old analogue metal detector to locate pipes and cables in the walls, but after seeing someone else using the new digital types, I decided to get one. While I was dithering about which one to buy, my wife went ahead and bought me this particular model! For basic functionality it's pretty easy to use - switch on, calibrate and move it over the area and it'll identify studs, pipes and mains cables. Our house if pretty old and there's very little in the way of stud walls to be of use, testing this, but it certainly has mapped out pipes and mains cables which were the things I was most worried about anyway. The ability of "deep penetrate" walls is also a very useful feature. I've had this for just over a week now and haven't used it in anger, but I have been trying it out and have found it to be very accurate finding known pipes and cables - and it's also identified a couple of unknowns which actually turned out to be correct. I would suggest it you are in the habit of drilling into walls, you really need something like this for peace of mind - but don't expect it to be useful right out of the box, especially if you haven't used something like this before - it does take a few attempts to get used to it! Be prepared to test it out on known studs, pipes and cables to get used to it before using it in anger!

Great but needs care in use
I bought this to locate wooden studs behind plasterboard. The price was good and it comes complete with a battery. It's got a clear display and the depth options are useful when checking and double-checking initial results. The only reason for the 4* instead of 5* for 'accuracy' and 'ease of use' was that you need to make sure to re-calibrate each time and double-check for good results. It's not fool-proof but, once you know what you're doing, it gives good results. Could be improved with an on/off battery switch - I removed the battery before storing away because I don't use it often.

Easy to use and accurate enough to find studs in plasterboard walls
I was looking for a product to find studs in a plaster board wall prior to hanging a guitar rack on it and this sounded good, had a number good reviews and was keenly priced so I purchased one. I read all the instructions before using it and would recommend this to any other purchaser as the calibration of the device before you start working with it is VERY IMPORTANT. It really is very easy to use and within a few minutes I had located 6 studs. A bit of further investigation with a 4mm drill and I found that the studs were 2" wide and 13" apart. This would have been impossible in this time without this bit of kit. I can heartily recommend it for home use. It's bright yellow so easy to find, has a clear screen and a convenient notch for marking the stud locations.

Good budget option for hobby DIYers.
Very fast delivery as usual from Prime. Easy to use with basic controls and instructions all though the accuracy and sensitivity varies considerably depending on where you calibrate it. Plastics feel fairly cheap and the buttons make a hollow click sound but doesn't feel like it's going to break any time soon. There are felt pads on the back to stop it scraping the wall but it could do with one on the battery cover as well, since it pokes out and drags along the wall, I will be adding this myself. Instructions are relatively clear although it does mention a deep scan switch that mine doesn't seem to have (must be for the more expensive model). Packaging is eco friendly as the box is easily recyclable or can be used for storing the scanner. Good budget choice for hobby DIYers that don't want to spend a lot on something that won't be used often.

Nicely designed - Clear display, calibratable sensitivity, and safety live wire detection always on.
This is a nice product. Previous detectors I've used have left where the actual point it's sensing is - IE: When it says it's found a stud, or metal, or wooden support, how wide the detection is - is it the centre centimeter? The whole width of the unit? The LCD display clearly points out where the edge is with a clear line, and when you've moved over to the past the edge, it changes to indicate that. The definite line on the screen, and the real-time reaction of the display shifting from 'edge of joist' to 'centre' to 'other edge' as you pan across, really gives me confidence - and I haven't popped a wire or pipe yet! I hadn't seen the calibration feature before, but it's useful. Having to place it against a non-joist part of the wall to calibrate, means that if you accidently find a joist, the scanning "doesn't go well", but it's obvious (No joists anwhere!) and you simply recalibrate six inches to a side. It also means that if you're getting 'what joists?' responses and you know you've got some, you can up the sensitivity, by having it calibrate away from the wall. Oh! I also like that the live wire detection is always active in other modes, too - wont stop you if the power is off, but it's a little extra safety and I appreciate anything that reduces my odds of accidentally earthing mains voltage through myself via a drill or nail. 😏 So, what's bad? Well, the grip could be a little better - the case sides slope to help you push and it against the wall, and slide it around, but just a little more grip on those sides would make it easier to lift off the wall. It's also possible to insert the 9v battery the wrong way round (ask me how I know!) which probably doesn't do the battery connector any good - but I'm really splitting hairs. While I haven't spent four or more times the price on the industrial grade versions of this, I've had more than one 'cheap' ones of these without displays that have mostly just left me confused, but this is absolutely the best one I've found, and would recommend it. I guess that the TLDR is that when my previous one of these went 'missing', I replaced it with the same unit.

Tried on wood and finds the edges, live cables are correctly identified. No problems so far.
