3 years great service, but no refills available now!
UPDATE: Very disappointed. I ordered my Townew Self-Sealing and Self-Changing 4 Gallon Trash Can 3 years ago, almost to the exact date. I was ready to place my 5th bag refill order, but they are no longer available. Clear example of planned obsolescence!! I have had 3 years of excellent mechanical service with very few frustrations, all of which were corrected with unplugging and replugging! I did eventually experience accidental opening from being too close over the IFR button, but it was always my fault of movement. Now, my only choice appears to be buying a new can and the specialized bags for it. And, I find that even mored aggravating because the trash can still works fine! I'd like to be thankful for that and continue as a loyal customer, but I'm not feeling cooperative under these circumstances. Come on, Townew company. At least service your products as long as they last! This item has been a spoiler for three years, now phooey? I have only used this TOWNEW Self-Sealing and Self-Changing 4 Gallon Trash Can for a 24 hour period in my home as a "seniors" bathroom accessory, so I have not yet tried some of the most important features like bag sealing and removal. However, on following the start-up directions, the bag did descend, open out fully across the bottom, and is far more spacious than I expected. The sensor does not make the lid pop up unless I am actually over the top of the sensor, so walking quite closely by it does not cause the lid to rise. Opening and closing operates quietly with a subtle beep, except the initial lowering of the bag was noticeably loud but did not enough to bother me. Looking at the lowered lid, I am not sure about odor seals, so only time will tell. Odors can also be dealt with by sealing and removing the bag. The mechanism can seal the bag at any stage of use, from one item to a overflow sensor situation. I am thrilled with this unit and look forward to how much more pleasant it will make my future years. I also am anxious to see the proposed kitchen size, and to know its price point. This smaller version is perfect for our master bath, and I am thrilled we could budget this luxury item. It looks modern and fits in style with our new automated bidet seat. I recently broke my wrist, and these 2 upgrades have made my struggles so much easier! Due to Covid-19, the grands and greats have not seen our new toys. Their arrival & "inspection" will surely test the mechanical side, even with adequate coaching. UPDATE: Have now sealed first bag, which was full but not overflowing the top. Perfect seal. Pushed the button on front. The lid stayed closed and I heard small mechanical sounds. Don’t remember if I had to push button to open lid, but sack was sealed and separated neatly and I pulled it out. Lid closed and I pressed button a second or two. I heard the louder sound (like a small jet engine). When that was over, I ran my hand over the sensor and lid opened to reveal the perfectly squared bottom stretched with a sack. Happy consumer. Highly recommend this for anyone, but the 4 gallon for a senior’s bathroom would make a marvelous gift, especially if you include an order for the sack refill squares. The lid seal seems completely adequate for daily, normal odors. If you toss in something extraordinary, just run it through the sack sealing cycle, remove, and reset a new bag. Nothing would be 100% no odor, but this unit will minimize odors nicely as long as the owner can responsibly operate the system.

Excellent Idea! Nearly Flawless Execution!
This trash can is brilliant! Such a terrific idea, I'm surprised no one had thought to make one before. This trash can is a little on the small side but is very much what I was looking for. I live alone & didn't like my standard 13 gallon kitchen trash can because it would take me 2 weeks or so to fill, meaning that I had to live with discarded food sitting in my kitchen for that long. Gross. It takes me about 2-3 days to fill this can, which is perfect to keep food odors from amassing. So far, the can itself, does not appear to have kept any bad smell or any liquids from accumulating inside the bin, which is impressive & speaks chapters about the quality of the "bags" & the sealing mechanism. While I've been careful not to toss any notable amount of liquid, I have tossed some wet foods and loose egg shells and the like & have had zero leaks in the bin or when removing the sealed bag. The bin is a little on the short side and the sensor's reach leaves a little to be desired. I'd constantly have to hunch over to get it to open and if I had to scoop food from a plate into the bin. To solve this issue, I bought a little 13" table to set the bin on, making it just a bit taller than a standard kitchen bin & it's now perfect. Plus, my dog no longer accidentally opens it when exploring, which is good, as the action would put him on edge. Another nitpick about the sensor, I wish it would either work constantly when open or at least run a quick scan before closing, as you sometimes find yourself racing against the clock if you've got a stubborn bit of food stuck on a plate before the lid inevitably closes on your hand. It doesn't close hard or anything but instead of reopening when coming in contact with your hand, it just kind of gets stuck where it is until you push the button a couple of times to reset it. Of course, it has a mode that keeps the lid open & you'd usually use this if you knew you'd need more time but there are moments when things just take longer than expected, like what I said about the stuck food bits. You also, unfortunately, can't completely replace a traditional bin with this, as the tiny 6" opening means that there are a lot of things that you simply cannot fit into it. To end on the good, while I did not count the number of bags to come out of the initial ring, it did last me 3 days shy of a full month before having to replace it. Also, the battery life is great. This is my main bin and where all of my trash aside from toilet tissue goes and after almost a full month of daily use, the battery indicator has only gone down one dot out of the 4. I would definitely recommend this to anyone considering giving it a try and if they ever come out with a larger version, I'd likely buy that one, too. This company has definitely proven itself a quality brand.

Expensive but well worth every dollar
The motion detection is a bit over sensitive and gets inadvertently activated quite often. As for durability, I wouldn’t drop this from any distance off the ground, it appears fragile. This product is extremely expensive for what it is. However, with all of that said, the fact that this garbage can is self-sealing and self-refilling makes it completely worth all of its little quirks and negative points. I don’t have to fiddle with removing cheap grocery store bags and replacing them. This device does it all for me.

Early disappointed adopter
Purchased this in Feb 2020 after seeing it at an electronics show. I was intrigued so I snagged a T1 with a box of refills. Sadly, this little thing has wore out my patience. Battery - Lasted about 4 months before the unit needed to remain plugged in full-time in order to operate. While not a deal breaker, it did defeat the idea that this would be rechargeable over the long term. I contacted the “support” team via their web form ticketing system only to be told, in short, nothing they could do and I should do the stuff in the manual which I had already done more than once. The recharge time leading up to that was WAY more than 10 hours too which was probably an early indicator of a battery issue. Nor did I ever get a months usage out of the battery. The longest I clocked was 22 days. This leads me to the “Support” feedback…. Support - With the battery issue I had to wait nearly two weeks for an initial reply. The reply asked for information I had sent in originally when the ticket was opened. After a few sequences back and forth I flat out gave up. They were wasting my time and it was cleat there was no interest in trying to resolve. It was here that I also learned that you basically cannnot do anything to the unit or you “void the warranty” so replacing the battery myself would have endangered the rest of the device. Durability - While it is fair to say that I was able to get 19 months out of the thing it hasn’t been without it’s problems. For context, the can was used once or twice a day nearly exclusively for food trimming while the Simple Human can next to it was for everything else. The device is fairly fragile overall and feels like it too. The lid in particular (more on this in a minute). Over time you find that the four little magnets in the part of the lid/bag cover you lift up to place in the bags rusts. They eventually dislodge from the little bag cover.and it becomes irritating to reseat the lid after the replacement cartridge is put in. As well, the lid itself, the piece that opens and closes, is entirely plastic and with time, the lid hinge eventually cracks. Parts - Forget it. No parts are available via the website. These units are basically throw away units when they break….especially if beyond the warranty. If you are giddy to contact support they will inevitable reply with the same copy-n-paste response they use for nearly everything. Send a picture of the unit showing the sticker on the bottom, send us a copy of receipt to prove you purchased it, blah blah blah. Really? Just so I can order a part and/or tell me it’s out of warranty? Don’t give me nonsense about needing to know so one can get the right part…it’s not like there are dozens of models for the T1. Silly. As a technologist and early adopter I tend to be patient and overlook shortcomings in the interest of seeing how things work. I think the short life of the battery and its longer term lack of being rechargeable is a bit of a dealbreaker when clocking in at $120+ USD. I recognize a lot of things come out of China in terms of manufacturing. In this case, maybe Shanghai Townew Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd has support issues and rather not deal/sell parts, returns etc so its simply easier to field support questions via web form and limit the Community postings. I dont know. Just seems odd. Replacement bags - When I bought the original unit I also bought a box of the replacement cartridges. They lasted nearly though the lifespan of my unit. I was about halfway through the last cartridge so fair to say that the cartridges will last a while pending the usage. Only had a couple bags break over that span and in that regard I believe the replacement cartridge bag material was quite sturdy despite their thickness. In sum, I really wanted to like this product in its entirety and was willing to fork over more than $120 for the unit to start. I’ve even considered purchasing a new one (2021 T1S) however I’ve already read enough reviews about the same battery issues that i had with this early model and simply not interested in dealing with that again. Particularly given the poor experience I had with their “support”. Lack of part availability such as cartridge covers when they break/fail is a shortcoming. I’m not interested in being interrogated as if I stole one of these things for a cartridge cover. I just cannot see myself spending another $120+. With the number of options available today for these types of cans I think I’ll wait a bit for the technology to mature.

Could use stronger bags, but you just have to be gentle with heavier loads
I bought this specifically for collecting scooped cat litter. Unfortunately, the first time I tried to empty a half-full bag, it fell apart. I had to take the whole unit over to the big garbage can and hold it upside down to empty things without making a bigger mess. I'd put the bag strength somewhere between cling-wrap and a typical grocery store shopping bag. I suppose the bags may need to be so thin for the self-sealing mechanism to work and/or for compactness. In any case, the bags won't handle near the heft that a normal garbage bag could. UPDATE: Adding a star after a couple of months of use. While it's true that the bags are not as sturdy as typical garbage bags, if you handle them with a bit of care, they work fine. Not knowing this originally, I just tried to yank the bag straight out, which caused it to tear. I've learned that if you slowly lift/wiggle them out, they hold together even with several pounds of load. I haven't ripped a single bag since that first time. We use this trash can for the waste from several cats (honestly it's kind of perfect for that) and for what it's worth, in two months I have recharged the trash can once and refilled the litter bags once.

Very clean and intelligent room trash can
This is the exactly same factory brand who made Xiaomi trash can. I don't recommend to use it in the kitchen since it is small and the material of the trash bag might not be as durable as the one you are using in the kitchen. However, this is a perfect trash can in the living room or bed room because its portable size. I think this could also be a good idea to use it as a bathroom trash can because you can keep your hand clean while taking out the trash. The price is 20~30$ more expensive than the one in Asia. ( general stuff from xiaomi is more expensive because shipping cost). I actually bought this trash can in Taiwan, but unable to bring it to US because the Battery problem(Lead-Acid battery). I am happen that they finally sell it on Amazon. Only complain I have is the sensor distance is a little bit short. You need to put your hand very close to the sensor which I often hit the cover with my hand. One trash bag is suggest to last for a month, but I highly doubt if you just use it in the room (unless you throw trash everyday). I know they have a lighter version of smart trash can (Townew T air, shorter, no cover). It would be a great choice for trash such as left over food waste.

Best trash can ever!
This is my second can. Ever time I change the bag I tell my husband "I love my trash can!" It's easy to use and easy to refill. This one is a bit noisier than my first one (that I still use. The lid broke after a year of use but it still works without the lid). I think the price should be lower because $100 for a trashcan is crazy. But I can't see being without it now. I would recommend it. It looks small but it holds a lot more than you think.

Concept is great but longevity not so great
What I like about the product is it seals the trash bag for disposal. What I dislike the trash can does not last longer than 6 months. This is my time purchasing this trash can the first 1 lasted about 1 year (battery life) the second less than six month. The issue I am having is when its time to recharge the trash can never seems to work again. The price is really expensive to keep having to re buy every six months. I thought I found the trash can for me but I am going to start a search for a new one. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED AT THIS TIME.
