Yamaha PSS-A50

Purchased for my 8 year old daughter as a first non-toy keyboard. I like Yamaha (used to have a TRB bass guitar) as it is well-priced for the quality you are getting. The size is great for getting little hands capable of some interval stretches (she can manage about a perfect 5th on this) and chord playing. The sounds are impressive and there are some effects to muck about with. You can also record phrases and play back. Hooked it up to Garage Band just to see if you can (you can). I would recommend this for anyone who doesn’t want a toy and is wanting to progress to beginner level.

A great little thing. I have high end gear. I bought this as a toy to take on holiday, but it's actually amazing for the money. I may even use it on one of my tracks.

I've wanted a small but functional USB MIDI keyboard for some time. I like composing, but at 5am in the morning it's not great to play my piano or my larger keyboard. I also have a small office which is ideal if I could find a smaller keyboard to place on the desk 'at will'. Enter THIS keyboard. Small footprint, compact, USB or battery powered, light, reasonably well featured and sensible MIDI instrument set if slightly imperfectly chosen. If I was to design my OWN keyboard it wouldn't be far away from this model. It comes boxed and with a USB lead. The keys are semi sized, but relatively easy to play despite my slightly oversize hands. One feature I use a lot is the drop/raise octave as there are only three octaves which doesn't quite cover full vocal range for all musical keys. All in all it does what I hoped it would, performs well, doesn't need additional power, and with a decent pair of headphones serves my purposes. If there was one tiny criticism I would say that some of the sound samples aren;t of the best quality, causing some winces when playing some tracks. That's a minor observation but at its' price-point it is sufficiently adequate.

This isn't for everyone - especially if you don't like minikeys, but if you are already looking into getting the PSS-A50 then you probably know what the keys will be like. They are actually ok - small of course, but these same keys are on the Reface series keyboards and they were 5 times the price at launch - so they are quite usable and the touch sensitivity (velocity sensitive) is usable although not amazing. The speaker sounds a bit rubbish and probably doesn't add anything to the already mediocre piano sounds, however, its reasonably loud and as a practice/composing tool is really useable. The arp features are good and can be applied to all the different instrument sounds which makes for some interesting experimental playing around. This would not be good for a beginner in piano for learning to play (keys too small), but for practicing learning chord structures etc could be useful and is what I have been using it for. Its small enough to squeeze into a (larger) daysack, which is pretty amazing, so for a take anywhere keyboard that won't break the bank if it gets stolen or damaged, you can't really go wrong with the little Yamaha. As others have mentioned, it could be used in the same way someone might carry a guitar for composing / singalong etc and is even smaller. The batteries seem to go on for ever too (just 4 AA's). Happy with it so far, my only gripe is that he finish and screen look rather cheap - but then maybe this makes it look more like a toy (unlike the Reface series) which actually adds to the charm and makes it a little bit less of a target to would-be thieves. Maybe it's a little redundant if you already have something like the Reface CP, but if you don't and need an ultra portable keyboard, then this would definitely do the job.

Bought as a xmas present. Great quality, excellent battery life, although we will probably get the charger soon as we use more frequently. Great selection of sounds, and voices for the keyboard. Speakers are pretty decent. Sounds excellent with the pressure sensitive keys. It can also record.

i wanted a light small keyboard with touch sensitive keys as i have that on a larger piano...this one with 37 keys and the octave button means you can adjust to make the keyboard play up 8 notes x4 to get the high end notes and also down 8 notes x four to get low end notes, so that means one touch and you can play a full range of notes...great for me who is still learning what they are so that i do not need to miss them... a great keyboard, very light, comes with a usb power chord but i use an extension as that is short. the manual has instructions which are simple, and from page 14 on it state the voice, and all other tone lists. transposable and metronome etc, drums and all you can do...it works as a midi but for me that is not needed. yes a good buy that i am very pleased with. touch sensitive is adjustable 1, 2, 3 or turn it off. i use it on setting 2 the default. smaller keys but still playable. ej

A wonderful little keyboard that in my opinion is just the right amount of portable. Not too small to where you are very limited in your playing, but not so large it becomes cumbersome. Obviously the keys are smaller, but they feel very nice to use, and there are a decent variety of sounds, although as another review mentioned they are not normalised- some are far louder than others. There are some other functions I won’t get into, but in general they’re certainly serviceable at the very least. The speaker was a large part of this purchase for me, and the quality is quite good although there is a constant static fuzz which isn’t much of a big deal for me as I’m not particularly focused on getting clean audio, but you may want to consider how you’d feel about it.

Je ne trouve pas de défaut majeur à un clavier qui coûte 85€ et avec lequel on peut carrément composer ou arranger n'importe quel morceau... En fait, j'avais peur de ne pas pouvoir le relier à mon DAW, mais en fait le port jack permet d'envoyer le signal en analogique au DAW ou même à des enceintes ou à n'importe quel CAB, du moment qu'il y a un ampli. Il y a quand même un peu de souffle, histoire d'impédance peut-être, mais je peut atténuer ça sur ma carte son, voir quasiment le supprimer, à voir si un boitier DI peut résoudre complètement le problème?. J'aurai aussi préféré un port jack 6,5mm mais bon ça fait le job. Donc voilà j'utilise ce clavier arrangeur pour mes compo et on a tous ce qu'il faut pour tout composer. Le mode arpège est utile pour plein de riffs quand on manque d'inspiration. Et le bonus c'est qu'il est tellement compact et léger qu'il tient sur un pupitre. Le seul truc moins glamour c'est qu'il a visuellement l'aspect d'un clavier d'initiation pour enfants (qui soit dit en passant sont aussi certainement une cible pour ce produit) heureusement, il n'a pas les touches lumineuses dessus! Un pro qui vagabonde peut tout à fait trouver son compte à acheter ce clavier qui de plus fonctionne aussi bien sur pile que sur prise secteur, ou même juste en le branchant à son ordi en USB. Cette prise USB justement parlons en, elle fait donc à la fois alimentation et transmetteur de signal MIDI. Avec cela on peut activer l'option, le clavier arrangeur devient un clavier maître, évidemment ici sans touch pad. C'est simple et clair, y a que Yamaha qui propose un clavier aussi compact avec autant de possibilités et avec des sons d'aussi bonne qualité. Je précise que mis à part le petit HP, logiquement pas très puissant, bien que suffisant pour correctement entendre ce qu'on joue, les sons d'instru sont idem que sur les claviers haut de gamme de la même marque, même qualité. il y en a surement moins que sur les Yamaha PSR-SX ou PSR-E et puis y a pas la molette d'octave physique, bien que le bouton motion effect fasse à peu prés le même taf, mais quand même c'est à souligner. Branchez ce jouet sur une sono et vous aurez un vrai petit synthé, même sur scène vous trouverez surement votre compte sur de petites scènes de type bar/pub. L'effet de vélocité fonctionne bien, mais par défaut il est pour moi trop présent et je devais appuyer comme un bourrin pour sortir le volume max, heureusement on peut facilement modifier ça voir même supprimer la vélocité, il y a 4 modes pour ça, mode OFF : pas de vélocité, on ne peut jouer que des notes ff mode 1 : vélocité assez faible, note ff (maximale) atteinte sans forcer... mode 2 : vélocité modérée, il faudra frapper fort pour jouer f ! Et éclater votre clavier pour jouer ff. mode 3 : vélocité prononcée (par défaut), il faudra frapper fort pour jouer mf! Et éclater votre doigt + votre bureau pour ne sortir que du f. Révisez vos cours de solfège si vous ne comprenez pas ;p ;p ;p à moins de vouloir éclater votre clavier avant la fin de garanti légale, je vous conseil de vous cantonner au mode 1 pour la vélocité mais après c'est vous qui voyez... perso je ne l'utilise pas, pour avoir un volume suffisant pour mes compos. Exclusivité Yamaha, n'hésitez même pas! J'ai cherché et aucune autre marque ne construit un clavier d'aussi bonne qualité et aussi compact. Pour le mode Arpeggio qui est quand même vachement complet et varié, on a un mode sustain, faute de pouvoir brancher une pédale de sustain, mais bon faut quand même pas être c** pour le prix, c'est très bien. Mais vraiment le mode MIDI sera surement un plus pour moi, même si pour l'instant je n'utilise pas cette fonction, les sons présents dessus étant déjà suffisants pour composer les bases de mes morceaux. Et puis alors, gros plus! et pas des moindres, tu branche, y a du son! Pas comme les claviers maîtres avec lesquels il faut d'abord décrocher un master en MAO pour réussir à sortir un son, et surtout avec lesquels il faut obligatoirement un ordinateur avec les logiciels qu'il faut et qui je le rappelle coutent toujours une somme en supplément, et c'est souvent pas donné du tout! Et pour finir, les logiciels gratuits offerts avec des claviers maître dans cette même gamme de prix offriront un choix très limité de sample et de sonorité instrumental, car ce ne sont pas des synthé! Souvent y aura pas de guitare par exemple et puis les logiciels pour attribuer les touches à un sample vont te broyer le cerveau tellement ils sont nazes et pas ergonomiques, je prends l'exemple de MPC beats fourni avec les CM de chez Akai, j'ai essayé et j'ai abandonné l'idée de composer avec ça après 1 semaine de galère (j'avais acheté un Akai mini MPC, même gamme de prix) je l'ai retourné. Ici on branche, ça envoi. Évidemment puisque c'est un clavier arrangeur, donc c'est d'abord un piano. On pourrait même qualifier cet instrument de "workstation" nomade, si il y avait quelques fonctions supplémentaires pour les pros. Dans mon cas, si j'ai pris ce clavier c'est que j'avais très peu de place chez moi et que je voulais absolument le placer sur mon bureau et pas ailleurs, donc il trône devant mon clavier de PC, sauf que celui-ci ne me sert pas à écrire mais à composer de la musique. Et de plus, il me servira en concert pour les parties synthé, il peut même servir de PAD pour les intros ou les ponts... c'est vraiment l'instru' polyvalent qu'il me fallait. Merci Yamaha, toujours les boss, toujours parmi les meilleurs que ce soit dans les engins motorisés comme dans la musique, car en plus de savoir construire les meilleurs pianos du monde, ils font aussi de très bonnes basses! (je suis bassiste) et aussi de très bons prix.

Beautiful little instrument. Received in perfect packaging. The device has nice features for its price. The UI is not that great and for some use cases, it is a limiting factor. The sound output is mono, which I wasn't expecting for a keyboard in this price range. The key action is okay. The keyboard is light and offers usb midi and 3.5mm connectivity. It can take 4 rechargeable Ni-Cd cells, but you need to set the type in the UI. I have heard that it could be powered using the USB connection alone, though haven't tested it.

Amazing keyboard to throw in the suitcase when going on vacation. Practice scales, learn new tunes while sitting on the lanai watching the waves roll in on Waikiki, very happy with it. Great value for money.
