Good replacement for Niaspan
Even though I had been taking Niaspan via prescription from my cardiologist for 4 years, my Tricare/Express Scripts insurance stopped supporting it. After 6 months of futilely trying and failing to get any resolution and my cholesterol and triglycerides levels going through the roof, I started looking for alternatives and found Watson Time Release. I've been using it for 3 weeks now. The 1000 mg tablets are definitely big, but I got used to taking them after a few days. Since I had been out of Niaspan for 6 months, I went through the same initial side effects as when I first started taking Niaspan. I had slight flushing. The achy joints and muscles gradually faded after about 10 days, but I was miserable until the symptoms subsided. So far, I'm satisfied with Watson Niacin Time Release; I only gave 3 stars since I'm a tough grader. I will provide an update after I take my next blood test. I've also been eating oatmeal every morning, taking 1000 mg fish oil, taking flax hull lignans, eating 2 servings of fish per week (still trying to learn fish recipes that taste good), and reduced eating red meats. UPDATE 15 Jun 2015. Just got the results from the 13 Jun 2015 blood test. In only 2.5 months, my VLDL and triglycerides decreased 50%, and HDL increased from 36 to 47 mg/dL. So, I'm very satisfied, and upgraded my rating to 5 stars. And no prescription and insurance hassles! This is definitely part of my of my daily routine from now on.

Great product, value for money, excellent
For the folks complaining about hot flushing/burning sensation to face, neck and shoulder. I take a small (81mg) aspirin along with my dinner then after 30 minutes pop the 2000 mg Nicain tablets, no flushing. Also keep yourself well hydrated to eliminate flushing. This medicine is very cost effective and I get it much cheaper than using my workplace insurance

Flush
Flushing on some pills are not consistent. Some days, flushing and itching are immediate. Other days, they are all at once a few hours later.

Very successful in lowering cholesterol
As a 76 year old with familial high cholesterol, I have used this product about 15 years, along with two other family members who have also kept their laboratory results within normal ranges using this product. Niacin acts by dilating the blood vessels which can cause flushing, and Rugby Niacin has a time release tablet which delivers the niacin slowly over time, so the body eventually adjusts and flushes become minimal or disappear. My doctor is happy with the results and I have not experienced the problematic symptoms found with use of the chemical cholesterol medications. The size of the tablets in high doses is large but I have no problem swallowing them, and the tablets are smaller in lesser doses. Rugby has been a reliable pharmaceutical, and is extremely cost effective for those who use niacin to control cholesterol. Amazon's 3-pack is a great convenience.

Above and beyond pleased in every way
This was the brand my pharmacist ordered for me originally, so I ordered it at a higher dose in a 3-pack. I’ve discovered niacin is important for many deficiency-caused ailments, so I’m really pleased to to have my doctor take me off my blood pressure meds, cholesterol is normal and I’m no longer achy and stiff in all my joints at 68. This was less then half what I paid for 1 bottle of half the dose. I am very pleased with the price, delivery was faster than predicted.

Extreme Flush Even When Used Twice Daily
It seems like there is a lot of variability between these tablets. Sometimes there is no noticible flush at all, but about every 3rd or 4th time the flush is extreme and lasts for up to 3 hours. Very uncomfortable itching and heat starting at the head and going all the way down to the legs. Itchyness and heat is almost unbearable. I take real niacin (nicotinic acid) routinely and should have a tolerance to the side effects, but not with these tablets. I would not recommend this product unless you are willing to tolerate considerable discomfort.

Blood work comes back good for me.
I don't do well with statins;I've tried a few after having a heart attack at 34 (98% blockage). I take Zetia now with Niacin to control cholesterol and reduce plaque. I would not suggest this for people on statins because studies have shown that niacin delays the metabolism of statins causing a build-up in your blood that can cause overdose on the statins. I'm not a doctor, so please do your own research and talk with your doctor before mixing any drugs with OTC anything. I've tried regular niacin (flushing nicontinic acid) and this works well with the time release to reduce the flushing. I found that with the "hot" niacin, I built up a tolerance for higher doses over time but I don't take it daily unless I get off my regular diet (holidays etc). Sometimes, I will take an extra baby aspirin (81mg) with these to further reduce any minor flushing; taking this with a meal has worked better than the aspirin.
